Pilar,
I'm thinking of crabbibg T'bay this weekend. have you heard anything about how full the shells are. I read on one of these threads last week it wasnt to bad. I've never tried Astoria yet. With the wind kicking up would T'bay be more protected from chop.

Dont show up this weekend or you will be all alone. It is the 19th for our Jetty fishing trip. If you went this weekend you will be fishing at low tide after dark which means when you are on the dry rocks it is a long way to the water. When you stand on the rocks next to the water it is slippery.
I will be at Tillamook Bay crabbing Sunday. Gonna put enough floats out it will look like a yellow styrofoam invasion. images/icons/tongue.gif Crab Pot bandit beware, dont get caught taking crabs from my pots or pay the high seas consequence. images/icons/mad.gif

Aaaarrgh! Looking like some pretty fearsome conditions out there for me to attempt. Been watching the buoy stats and marine forecasts, really had hopes of it showing some improvement, but alas, I fear it will not come. 9 ft swell w/ 4.5 ft chop is NOT fun in my book. If no significant numbers of sport boats can get out do you think they'll give us some xtra days when it's nice? Hahaha. Not likely. eh?
I have been doing ok for keepers in the gorge, may try that again if the wind doesn't rage up there too. I think it's drying up though, had to work pretty hard and run through 5 doz. smelt for two fish. May go for an exploratory run to the estuary to find some scrappy flats sturgeon. Oh well, tight lines to all, no matter what it is you'll be doing that is not halibut fishing.

Karen Lee, I'll probably end up there as well. Sorry Roy but on Friday night all the crabs you would have caught on Sunday are become mine!!
Don't know about how full the crabs are. We just keep pitching them back until we get what we need.

Pilar, Don't tell me that crap this early in the week. I just got all of my "no excuse halibut rigs" put together this morning.
Is there a web site you've been watching to see the weather and seas over there?

NorRivDave, hey they store well. Look at the link above it is updated at 330 and 930, 4 times a day. This is the text version of the computer voice you hear on the VHF weather.
This North wind thing usually happens in June, it is one month early. Maybe it will heal itself but I doubt it. There is always next weekend. It might break by then. Read it and weep friend. The wind blows and no one goes.....
Wait one .. I just looked again. It is improving maybe there is hope. Tomorrow is a new day.

Pilar,
I'm doin' my lay-down-and-stay-there dance images/icons/shocked.gif
I've had darn good luck with it in the past, but the effect usually only lasts about four minutes images/icons/grin.gif.
Man I want to tangle with a big fat flattie!
We need to have a plan B, a swelled up ocean is no place for me....
Tomarrow is another day.... Now where did I put that feather? images/icons/confused.gif images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/grin.gif

Is blowing from the North all up and down the coast. 25 kts. I hate to frown on good weather for all you gardeners but sunny here is windy there.
Hey Bait of Eggs you may have a few party crashers on the Saturday night jetty thing.
The good side is that this N wind is what drives the food chain offshore. N wind causes the upwelling that makes the plankton grow and feeds the baitfish. Salmon get fat and maybe we can catch some of them next year.
I'm looking for something else to do this weekend besides catch a flattie. I haven't given up yet but the wind is early and looks permanent.
Crabbing? Shad? Peelers? Yard work?

Pilar,
What exactly is all this telling me. Is the swell actually 7' high, or are the 3' waves 7' feet apart?

I f they are saying there is a 7 ft swell and 3 ft. of wind chop, relaisticly you could go over a 10ft wave if they lined up. What is more most important is the timing crest to crest, yet this is hard to visualize off a bouy report. Last year for instance, I went to the pile probably around 30 times and always compared what I saw with the bouy reports and usually they were fairly accurate. There were times when the ocean was flat and the report said steep, I think it gets weird data when it doesn't get enough action. Then there was one day when RJ and I went and when we got back it said it was 8.6 ft and very steep and it was just that YUK!
What I do trust most is the wind data, and it is always trustworthy.
The with that can ruin a guys day is the current direction and speed and around the pile there are days when you can't reach the bottom on calm days with 48 oz.

Talked the Tillamook Coast this AM. As of 7:00 the bar was closed to all non-commercial vessels.

Checked it after the update at 0930. It's 4 and 4 for tomorrow. We're going down there tonight. We may not fish tomorrow but we have to be nearby just in case.
4 ft seas, 4 ft swells. To answer NorRiveDave's question; Swell is the long slow waves that you see as surf on the beach. They are far apart and with no wind are generally not a problem until they reach 7ft. When a wave doubles in size the power stored in it goes up by a factor of 4. Seas are the little close together waves driven by the wind IE: whitecaps.
What I have come to know is that NOAA predicts the worst conditions probable in their forecasts. A 4ft sea would result if the wind blew as hard and for as long as they predict. That would be the worst seas experienced. Watch the trend, it is the most important!!
The 4 ft. swell is a long term condition and is affected by factors off shore. It will be a 4ft. swell in the morning. The seas will most likely be calm in the morning and increasing as the day progresses. The 4ft sea will occur in the afternoon after the wind kicks up.
The really good news is the trend. Just yesterday it was 4 ft seas, 9 ft swells. Now it is 4 ft seas, 4 ft swell. I really like the trend.
Gentlemen man your Halibut boats and pray for a day at the church of the bent rod.
Keep us posted Wak'm & Stak'm.
One last thing, make sure you like the weather before you go. It's totally ok to cancel at the last minute due to weather. It is not OK to let pride or 'go fever' land you in the newspaper or a Coast Guard rescue.
