When fishing the Sandy River with bait you tend to catch alot of suckers, Do you reel them in and carefully release them to go suck up more salmon eggs or do you pull them up on the bank to die or let your child torture them? I had one on the bank tonight and a person approached me and asked if it would be a good idea to put it out of it's misery so it does not die a slow miserable death flopping in the sand. I told that person they could do it if they wanted to and they walked away.....Where i fish there is adult eagle, osprey, heron and crows take care of this trash fish. What would you do ?

Bonk it and THEN let the eagles and ospreys have it (has osprey resorted to picking up dead suckers off the banks? muhaha). Remember... CHUBS ARE PEOPLE TOO!

I pitch them into the blackberry bushes. Years from now the archeologists will wonder if chubs crawled up on land to feed on blackberries.
Remember it's ok to eat or kill fish because they don't have feelings .....

Bleed `em out and toss them in the bushes. Let the little critters part them out.

Not to be graphic, but there is a pretty cool way to kill suckers. You grab them behind the pec fins, so your forfinger and thumb are around the fish and squeeze. If you do it right, you pop the fish's spine and kill them instantly. Pretty cool party trick too. Oops, did that come out. Hope PETA isn't reading this.

chnookie,
Does that spine popping trick work for other fish like trout?

I like to cut the leader, tie a bobber to the end and throw the sucker and bobber back in the water. Then I like to sing the song - "show me the way to go home, I'm tired and I want to go to bed" while my buddies hum the jaws theme, DA DUM.. DA DUM.. DA DA DA DA DA, as the bobber pops up around us.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I got give my opinion. I personally hate it when I walk down a bank to go fishing and see dead suckers everywhere rotting in the sun; it's an eye sore and smells bad to. I think it’s unethical to kill something if your not going to eat it, and all it does is ad fuel to the fire for groups like PETA. If I'm not mistaken I believe it’s also against the law to waste a fish.
Quick Mike, get a tourniquet.......your heart is bleeding. Did you ever set a mouse trap? A roach motel? Ever snuff out a hornet's nest, or an ant's nest. Ever swat a fly? Did you ever fish with a nightcrawler?
If so, get off your high horse. Did you think calling guys idiots would make them see things from your point of view? It made me think you're a bleeding-heart sissy, and a hypocrite to boot. images/icons/mad.gif

As a long time member of this board Mike you should know the rules so you need to refrain from name calling. It's okay to express your opinion but please refrain from flaming.

Oh Peta will love this...
images/icons/rolleyes.gif
Bill is wondering if they are for sure suckers? He knows there are whitefish in there.
If they are whitefish they do not prey on the salmon eggs, they are insect eaters.
If they are suckers they still don't still don't eat salmon eggs, really...
Anyway... his two cents.

images/icons/frown.gif images/icons/frown.gif Oh my Mikey did you say what I thought you said images/icons/confused.gif
If you feel so bad for them suckers you sure sure don't want to know what we do to Dog fish images/icons/shocked.gif You want some cheese with that images/icons/tongue.gif
That is a nice boat ******,I think maybe Redneck might be able to row that one....Os
If they don't eat salmon eggs, then why do I keep catching them on salmon eggs?
Either they're confused about what's on the menu, or I am images/icons/grin.gif.

Yes, Jennie from Peta here, didn't you know, OS? images/icons/blush.gif
Just do what Bill used to do. Stick an M 80 in their mouth and throw um in the air. Kind of like the exploding whale incident on the South Coast, remember that? Small scale replica.....
On the 12th ave bridge in Seaside the great sport for mudcat was to throw em in the road and watch people drive over them...
Bill doesn't know why, he says... that they bite on salmon eggs. How is that for a scientific theory?

Don't know for sure, I've tried the death grip on a few other fish, but nothing works like suckers. I think it's because the are so round in cross section up near the head, and physiology. I think a trout would just get squooshed.

I know there are whitefish on the Deschutes River but are they around here? BTW whitefish are members of the char family which is related to the trout family right?

Death by De Crapitation. After catching them on SALMON EGGS (whitefish too, check the friggin' Cowlitz out below the dam), I stand over them with a rock, talk a whole bunch of trash until they crap themselves, then launch the rock. The way the spine and body is, if you hit them right under "the chin" area, the head snaps back. Then you commence to peeing on them. If you can't pee on them, your fishing buddy can. Right Dan? images/icons/grin.gif That's how you salt the fish in my recipe, then you kick the fish back in the water or the bushes if you remember to.
You can't have conservation and trash fish in the same sentence unless you eradicated some of those fish.
They are not worth the same as a chum or native steelie because no one in Japan would buy the eggs, and no one would buy one out of the hot bed of a pickup truck for a $1 a pound either. Besides, netting those fish weren't part of their heritage...I'm sure, only because they have no monetary value.
So if you lost respect for me Mike H, you can email me and really lose ALL respect you ever had for me. images/icons/cool.gif

Bigstew:
Whitefish are in the same family as salmon, trout, and char (salmonidae). There are two (I think) genuses (sp.) of whitefish, one of which includes the Mountain whitefish, our most common one. This genus (Prosopium) also includes grayling, but the chars (Salvelinus) are a separate genus, as are the Pacific salmon and trout (Oncorhynchys). So yes, salmon, trout, chars, and whitefish are all in the same family.

So I'm a bleeding heart-sissy huh DanS? Is it the fact that I have respect for all forms of nature that makes me such a sissy? Like I said above, I'm not a PETA supporter nor do I believe that nothing shall be killed. Hell, I'm probably more of a carnivore than most of you. It's the needless and destructive killing of fish that bothers me. If that makes me a sissy then so be it.
A while back there was a raging issue, which centered around RT regarding crude and non-appropriate posts on this board. It was stated (I think by Jennie) that this board was more of a "family orientated" board. How is needlessly destroying suckers any better than a sex joke or some name calling? Kids are going to see plenty of sex stuff and they will hear lots of potty words on their own. Do we really need to introduce them to animal destruction?
And Hey_Yall, I haven't lost any respect for you. Actually I never had any to begin with and I believe this board is a better place now that you concentrate on Bob's board.
Finally I apologize for any harsh name calling in my previous post. I was just trying to stoop down to the level of some of the neanderthal-like comments I was reading.

I respected some of you guys before I read this post. This is disgusting! I'm no PETA advocate but to kill something just to kill it is disgusting. You a-holes complain about how the Native Americans kill chum salmon, take their eggs, and leave the carcasses to rot on the bank. You HYPOCRITES! This is the same situation but you aren't even taking the eggs! A sucker is just as valuable as a chum salmon though maybe not to some of you close-minded idiots.
You all disgust me! images/icons/mad.gif images/icons/mad.gif images/icons/mad.gif

So, exactly how do you feel about this anyway, Mike H. ?
Temper, temper ........
If you can't take a joke, have your jaw broken and wired so you can't laugh anymore.
I'm a ruthless killer of the Northern Pikeminnow. I figure it is my duty as one of the apex predators on this planet.
As far as the other non game fish, they almost always come to the bank with the hook in thier guts and they are dead anyway.
I'm pretty sure every one on this thread was just having fun at least until you came along. That's what the sunglasses mean.
JUST KIDDING

Here, Here Pilar.
I guess we should standardize the meanings of the smily's. Sunglasses means lets B_S_ about what we really would enjoy doing but are to humane to actually perform these acts of mangled carcasses. Muuuuhahah. So we are a little graphic in our speech. We are fisherman, not saturday morning bookstore-latte patrons.
Just remember -Old fishermen don't die, they just smell that way. images/icons/rolleyes.gif
