Recentely got to fish a lake in Eastern Oregon that had monster trout. The lake was a fly fishing/spinner fishing only and you were only allowed to keep 2 a day (most didn't keep any).

After getting a chance to fish such a quality lake I wondered why more lakes weren't managed this way. It would be really nice to have a few lakes of such good quality west of the Cascades.

Are there others out there that would forgo a stringer of fish to catch 16"-22" trout all day long? Who could I talk to at ODFW that might be able to consider managing a few more lakes like this?

On another note I read an article yesterday that said bass fisherman are the most likely to practice catch and release. Maybe it is time us trout fisherman learn a few things from those red neck bass fisherman.

So Grits,

Was this a private lake? The lakes in Eastern Oregon that I know of with regs like that are private lakes. It seem ODFW manages lakes to be put and take, and only some streams are managed for larger fish.

And yes, we bass fishermen are the ones most likely to catch and release. Have you ever tasted bass? Besides, you have to de-scale them which is messy. Bass in the South will grow on average about 1 lb. per year, so now ya know why we release.

I'm guessing the fish you were catching were triploid fish and cannot reproduce if the state is managing them in eastern Oregon. Hopefully, this contributed. If it didn't...bite me images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/grin.gif

It was not a private lake which is what made it amazing to me. It showed me that public lakes managed properly can produce some excellent fishing.
