I have a 2001 Honda 130 and I was wondering how often the water pump impeller should be change? It's working good now, but I also don't want to be out in the ocean when it goes. How often do you change yours?

I do mine 150-200 hours, maybe less if I'm beaching it a lot. Sand wears them out quickly. If it's been run at all out of water, replace it.

I also carry a new spare in the boat.

I agree, every 3 years at a minimum, there's no better way to protect your investment, at under 30 bucks for the part, its a no brainer.

It's best to change proactivley and not after the pump fails having to rely on the kicker to get back to the ramp. I changed my 115 Yamaha at 150 hours this was pushing it almost to the point of failure and it was definately on it's last leg. This was a Jet Drive and the hardest thing on water pump is sand.

If you're wondering, I say it must be time to change!

I do mine every couple years whether they appear to need it or not. Last year I inspected it. It was only a year old and it looked like new so I left it.

Cost of failure is an overheated outboard. Too risky for me to mess around with. When in doubt, change it.

Just changed mine this year after 1000 hours (3 years). I wouldn't wait that long again although it looked to be in good shape.

The longer you put it off, the more likely that you'll face frozen bolts. That transforms routine maintenance into a royal p.i.t.a. .

Just had mine done, would estimate probably 200 hours but it's seven years old ... mechanic that did mine recommends minimum of every five years with average use (not sure what that is in hours) ... with my motor (FICHT) the heat of the motor builds up, and since the computer is right on top, starts to cook the computer so when the water pump goes out, the motor goes and so does the computer ... like mentioned above, cheap insurance for long life of motor ... though I thought I had a "good" stream, when I ran the motor last weekend, really saw the difference - - -
