When I bought my boat I heard one of those rumors that people steal new boat trailers while you are out on the water. Since I had this brand new trailer and didnt want to return to it missing and no way to take my boat home I got into the habit of putting a lock on the trailer. It wasnt until the next year I noticed that the hitch was not locked to the pickup receiver. Somebody could have pulled the hitch from the receiver and taken the trailer and the hitch. Now I have locks on both and as a habit, lock the trailer on every trip.
Who else locks their trailers to the tow vehicle? Anybody ever loose a trailer?

Whoa! And a bright light dawns! My trailer is also locked rock-solid to my hitch. But my hitch is not locked to my pickup either. Arggh.

I had my trailer hitch stolen at Fred Meyers in the middle of the day! Everything now has a lock on it. Hitch, trailer, kicker motor, spare tire. There is one other item most people forget, the prop. I have never had one stolen, but a buddy has. You get up for a nice day one the water and your prop's gone images/icons/frown.gif .

Cabella's and West Marine catalogs have
numerous kinds of locks, including those
to protect your trailer while not locked
to your rig. These days, keep everything
I can locked.

Thumper you think that is bad, I locked my canopy door for years before I watched a guy walk up and drop my tailgate with almost no effort and crawl under the canopy door. He was a friend and laughing at me for even locking the door.
Now I have a set of double doors and no tailgate. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

I have always locked my reciever and my trailer. Make sure you buy locks that can't be cut off with a pair of bolt cutters or hack saw. Nothing is safe now days.

Why not paddle-lock one of the tow chains to the receiver hitch? images/icons/wink.gif

I am just now in the market to buy a new boat(or the right used one). one of the options that I am looking at is a hinged toung on the trailer. I figure that I can lock it back to protect from thieft, and I can also get a bigger boat to fit into the space I have to put it.
By the way, are there any "must have" options that I need when looking at a boat? There are plenty that I WANT, but what do I NEED?
Thanks

Do you guys remember just a few years ago, especially amongst fishermen(women) that this thread would have been bizzare or unheard of around here? Remember when you could leave everything in your boat overnight, and no one would touch it? I read Mission's statement about his rig being "keyed" and the thefts up at the Clack. What is wrong with these people? I've even had someone steal cheap stuff and parts off my trailer and rig in boat ramp parking areas. Hillsboro has become GANGLAND too. Don't get me wrong, still better than anywhere on the Planet. Just wish some of them would depart the Planet! images/icons/mad.gif images/icons/mad.gif

also insure your canopy, it`s an add on item and not covered under your policy. if someone breaks into it you would have no coverage.

not only do you need to worry about someone droping the tailgate but anyone with a pickup you need to make sure your tailgate is secure (locked) some tailgates just lift out. I heard of some tailgates being stolen.

you have to watch your accessories too, a buddy of mine has had oarlocks and rodholders stolen in a drift boat. Was hard to row with out oarlocks.
Murphy's law applies to thiefs. If they steal something, it will happen at the most inopportune time - you'll lose the spare right before getting a flat, they'll steal the hitch the night before a big trip.....

boater, no need to get extra insurance, if its attached to your truck its part of it and your policy will cover it providing you have full coverage,

dk, i have full coverage and had to add the canopy. its the same as a boat, your kicker, electronis etc. are all addons, your insurance wont cover it unless they know you have it and its on your record for coverage.
