What are the minimums/standard boat/motor size for the Columbia sloughs, and other open water I.E the bays. Lets hear your opinions.
I posted on your other thread, it's all about freeboard! My firt boat was a 12' Richline aluminum car-topper with a 7.5 Honda. For our first trip the wife and I took it from Clackamette launch out into the Willy and up to the Garbage hole durring springers, that was NOT enough horse power, and NOT enough freeboard! Scared the beejeeberz outa' me!
This is just for a point of reference for you.

Pretty subjective question... It depends upon the conditions and the skipper.
Usually, bigger is better, but even a big boat with an ill-prepared skipper/crew can be trouble.
Best advice... Buy a boat in good seaworthy condition with ample freeboard and horsepower.
Don't go boating in areas you aren't comfortable and/or familiar with. Research the area thoroughly and, if possible, go with someone who is familiar with the area first. Know the types of hazards to expect (River currents, submerged hazards, commercial traffic, aids to navigation, who/how to call for help.
Make sure you have all the safety gear you can. Good PFDs, radio, fire extinguisher, VSDs etc... etc... etc…
Take a boating class from either the Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary.
This is really a good place to start. You’ll learn a lot about boating, safety, navigation and what to look out for.
Good luck!
