I purchased a pro-blaster Wash down pump. I'm wondering what type of pick up valve with some sort of a screen I should get. I know this is a dumb question but what keeps the water from syphining into your boat through your pump?

You need a strainer before the pump - http://www.shurflo.com/pages/Marine/marine_product_sum/marine_sum_docs/water_sys_access/raw_water_strain.html . If you got the Pro Blaster Kit, then one comes with the kit. It is smaller than those shown above, looks like this - http://www.shurflo.com/pages/Marine/marine_product_sum/marine_sum_docs/washdown/washdownkit_25.html

Look here for the correct thru-hull and seacock to get, and how they should be installed - http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=129401 .

Generally your pump and nozzle are above water-line and will not siphon. Also, your nozzle is closed and won't siphon. I suppose it is possible that if one of the lines breaks, water could fill the boat. But, that is why you have a seacock directly attached to the thru-hull, and you will shut it off when ever you leave the boat.

Or you can install it the easy way. Just drop the pick up tube over the side of the boat when ever you need it. No holes in the hull and no fuss no muss.

I like that idea ALOT! I've been looking to get one too, but hated the thought of putting another hole in my hull..... Thanks Snowwolfe!
