YOU CAN HELP SAVE THE METOLIUS RIVER FROM LARGE RESORTS!

The Metolius River need our immediate protection through Senate Bill 30 - Metolius which would ban destination resorts from development within a three mile buffer of the river. If you have ever fished this beautiful and magical river, you will understand that the proposed development of potentially 3000 homes would destroy the river as it is now. Please visit the listed websites and spread the news for all your fellow fishing friends! It is imperative to write our legislature immediately to remove watered down amendments to this Bill which were added at the last public hearing.

kkmkra... thanks for the post. I was unaware of this and I find it extremely concerning given my own battles against the results of Measure 37 here in Washington County. If our legislators and other government officials and offices are to give way to special interests by ignoring, or simply making ineffective, the management methods that have made Oregon such a great state to live and raise our families, we have elected the wrong people to represent us. If everyone would step back and look at what is happening in Oregon I think they would be not only be surprised but also more concerned than it seems at this point. Many of us stand up and fight our local battles but as I look outside of my immediate environment I develop a much greater concern for what is happening in Oregon. Our stewardship of the land is being lost rapidly. First our farmland is rapidly becoming consumed by houses and strip malls and now places held sacred by so many are going to disappear. The Metolius basin is to my family what others have expressed, in their SB 30 testimony, a place of sanctuary and we too have spread the ashes of our loved ones at their request. Allowing development in such a pristine and fragile place would be a travesty and would continue to fuel more actions like this elsewhere. When are folks going to wake up a see what we are doing to ourselves in this state/country? Before long the American Farmer will be extinct and we will be dependent on other countries for our food (not good). Those that reap the benefits of our stupidity will be sitting in their resort condo at the banks of the Metolius watching the fish and habitat die without concern. Oh, by the way… no more access to the Metolius, or any other gold medal trout fisheries for you because you can’t afford to buy into the club.

Below, please find the most recent information on what you can do to help protect the Metolius River Basin! A little help will go a long way in protecting this special and magical river for future generations.

Hello everyone,

We need to get e-mails and letters to all State Senators ASAP encouraging them to support the original vision behind Senate Bill 30. Simply address your letter to your Senator, mention you are a constituent, and also cc the rest of the senators, stating:

1. That you want a complete ban on destination resorts in and within three miles of the Metolius Basin as provided by the original SB 30 bill;
2. that you are are passionate about the Metolius and why;
3. that the senate needs to act NOW to protect the Metolius.

As you may already know, the SB 30 was watered down so much in committee as to offer no substantive protection for the Metolius against resort development. But there is still time to get a good bill out of the Legislature – the amendments that weakened SB 30 can be removed!

Here is a list of e-mail addresses for all 30 State Senators. Simply copy and paste this into your “cc” box after addressing the e-mail to your own Senator:

sen.jasonatkinson@state.or.us, sen.bradavakian@state.or.us, sen.alanbates@state.or.us, sen.rogerbeyer@state.or.us, sen.katebrown@state.or.us, sen.ginnyburdick@state.or.us, sen.margaretcarter@state.or.us, sen.petercourtney@state.or.us, sen.ryandeckert@state.or.us, sen.richarddevlin@state.or.us, sen.tedferrioli@state.or.us, sen.garygeorge@state.or.us, sen.larrygeorge@state.or.us, sen.avelgordly@state.or.us, sen.betsyjohnson@state.or.us, sen.jeffkruse@state.or.us, sen.rickmetsger@state.or.us, sen.lauriemonnesanderson@state.or.us, sen.rodmonroe@state.or.us, sen.billmorrisette@state.or.us, sen.frankmorse@state.or.us, sen.davidnelson@state.or.us, sen.floydprozanski@state.or.us, sen.kurtschrader@state.or.us, sen.brucestarr@state.or.us, sen.joanneverger@state.or.us, sen.vickiwalker@state.or.us, sen.benwestlund@state.or.us, sen.dougwhitsett@state.or.us, sen.jackiewinters@state.or.us

And don’t forget to “cc” us as well at info@centraloregonlandwatch.org so that we can post your letter on our blog at noresorts.blogspot.com. (So far we have posted 125 letters of support!)

It’s also time to make sure that Governor Kulongoski knows how serious we are. You can send an e-mail to his office directly by going to www.governor.oregon.gov, selecting “contact us” and using the e-mail option. Please also contact Mike Carrier, the Natural Resources Policy Director, at jo.L.bell@state.or.us.

Please also forward this e-mail along to your friends, family-members, and others who share your concern, and if you are a member of an environmental, land use, fishing, hunting, or otherwise outdoor-oriented group whose members you believe would like to see the Metolius and places like it protected from large-scale development, we urge you to contact them as well and ask for their support.

As always, your support and energy have been tremendous. I know this has taken a lot of time out of your lives, but if we are going to get meaningful protection for the Metolius through legislation, our support must be ongoing.

We’ll be sending out additional information soon, and if you have any questions feel free to contact us. But for now, let’s get to finishing what we’ve started.
