View Full Version : Natives killing natives
I just shot off an email to KGW.
newstips@kgw.com is the email addy. There are several others do this from Bob's BB and I think it is a good idea. Here is what I sent them.
"On April 24th you ran a story about the Native Americans gillnetting the spring salmon on the Columbia. At no point did you mention the fact that they were netting and Killing native salmon. I think many people are in the dark about the problems associated with gillnets and the native salmon they kill. The native americans claim that this is their sacred fish and pledge to restore the runs, than they turn around and slaughter the fish in their nets. And they do so only to turn a few bucks.
I, and many other people would love to see a news story about how the Native Americans are gillnetting the remaining spring salmon that everyone is trying so hard to protect.
Thank you."
I think we should all take 3 minutes from the BB posting and send them an email. Maybe we can drum up some public awareness.

When you mention "Native American" you will lose your credibility. Sad but true images/icons/frown.gif I sent off a letter also but just mentioned that the fish were an endangered species being gillnetted and sports anglers have to and rightly so release these endangered fish. It's too bad that we have to be so politically correct to get our point across but it's true.
Here is the addy I sent mine too, it did not come back.

Thanks for trying. What can we say to make it "Politically Correct"?

Thanks for the kick in the butt to get something going Zaq. I would like to challenge the members of this bulletin board to writing an email to KGW and post here when you're done that you've done so. If we are as passionate about our fishing as we think we are, this thread should least meet the North River thread in terms of posts. I don't contend that the North River thread isn't important to some. However, the net issue is one that affects us all in a big way and should be given our undying attention.
My $2 worth.

Just goofing. Thanks all who sent mail. I am making some flyers to put up at work, to alert people and hopefully stop some of them, if not all of them, from going over there and buying salmon.
Keep em going.

I also sent my nickle's worth, I didn't see the story but I have the same problem with them killing for profit!! I will also post some bulletins at work. I had a co- worker ask for my smoked fish recipe so he could smoke his springer he bought from the Indians. After a ten minute lecture he left without any recipe, has not been back to talk since? Oh well just my opinion!! images/icons/rolleyes.gif

I sent mine. I'm totally opposed to the # of fish they net and the method in which they waste many of them. I always thought that their treaty rights were based on subsistence - in other words, they could harvest fish to eat and to perform tribal ceremonies. I'm generally not opposed to gillnetting when it is controlled and has little or no impact on a run of fish. For example, the 6000 fish harvested by the lower river commercial gillnetters doesn't bother me a bit when it turns out the number of springers crossing the Columbia river bar will easily exceed 600,000 fish this year. The sea lions eat more native fish than the commercial guys will catch in a 6000 fish quota. The problem I have with the tribal gillnetting is that many of the fish are wasted and they are allowed to harvest too many fish.

At the risk of calling down the thunder from above I'm going to wade into this one again. This is the first time in thirty years the natives have had a commercial season. If you don't want to buy their fish, don't! I don't and never have. I oppose all gillnetting on the river. Saying lower river gillnetting is ok but upriver is not is plain BS. Sorry but the lower river gillnetters have had some kind of season every year and the natives were kept at bay with the promise that when the runs exceeded 100,000 they would get their commercial season like they had before. Now it goes over 100,000, they get their season and everybody gets upset at them. Get upset at the agencies that make the rules. Where waste enters into the equation I'm not sure. I worked the upriver fishery for 10 years and saw little waste. What there was was investigated and prosecuted.. There is waste on the lower river also. All commercial fisheries have waste, it's a fact of life.
