Hey, I'm keeping an eye out for any reports back from the Big D this week or weekend. Headed to Remond to pay a speeding ticket on Monday and was going to try and make lemonade out of lemons.

Whitefish should be active first, a state record is within reach, everyone is fat in there, lots of sand around Maupin, still being kicked up, but the level is good. Best fishin' to you.

I was on the lower D last weekend and the fishing was good. Surface action was very good on March Brown patters during mid day. I caught more fish on dries than nymping which is usually not the case for me on the D but last weekend was excellent. I would venture to say that with the predicted weather front moving through, this Saturday could yield similar results.

Good luck!

I just got back and it is slowwwwwww! Caught two trout and maybe a dozen smolt. Zero whitefish. 65 degrees sunny. Put in at Nena around 1:30 pulled off round 5:00. There was good insect activity and no fish rising.

Sam, thanks for the current report. I was going to go today but the weather was so nice I chose golf instead. I often use the pontoon to float Nena to Longbend. I saw that you are floating down from Warm Springs on the opener. You will float by me on Saturday morning. Make sure to wave.

I would love to make it over with my DB when the action picks up. I too had a healthy speeding ticket last year on my first trip to the Big D but I'll be back and watching my speed next time. Not to steal your post but when do things pick up and are there any shuttle services?

If you're doing the Warm Springs to Trout Creek stretch call Fish's Shuttle Service at 541-475-3129. I think the upper stretch will be good right away since it's been closed since the end of the year. Should be some decent mayfly (BWOs on cool overcast days, PMDs on warmer sunny days) fishing. I don't like to fish big nymphs this time of year because the trout are spawning and you'll hook too many spawning fish.
Anything looking up to take dries and surface film nymphs isn't likely to be a spawning fish.

Last I checked, it opens April 28, right? I plan on being there from WS to TC if I'm not chasing Springers on a CR trib. Red and white Clackacraft with oval Team Cast and Blast sticker on each side toward the bow and an Ifish sticker on the transom.

Last weekend I saw more hatchery smelts than redds, be careful of those. I got pulled over in OC but no ticket. If you didnt get hit last year, be careful leaving the Dalles southbound. The revenue enhancement officer has a plain brown car, and he stays real busy except for lunch and dinner hour.

Good thing I go over Hwy 26, then... it's pretty much a straight shot for me. Thanks for the heads-up though.

Two years ago the sheriff hung a u-ie to give me a polite warning for 6 over while about 15 miles out of The Dalles heading south. A long straight rural road like that with fishing on the brain, you better be sure to check your speed. Sorry... no current report.

Just got back, slow again today. Had some good dry action from 1:30 to 1:50. Every cast on MB's. Nymph fishing has been poor with a few better than yesterday. Only 2 white fish. I was fishing behind several boats sinse I put in around noon. Tons of people camping and floating. Just missed the rain. No troopers seen all the way home.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, my speed is down hitting Maupin now. I might have have some oppotunities sounds like, but won't hold my breath. I have to try though on Monday night just cause I'm there. I'll let you know what if anything goes on.
