View Full Version : Large or Small Fly
I was just reading one of the reports and it spoke of using a 14 and 16 with a large wooly bugger. This got me to thinking about what size fly I like to fish the most for trout. I usually go to either a small midge 18 or 20 or a size 16 something. So I guess my favorite size is 16. I know for the most part you should start by matching whatever is coming off. But the question is you arrive and nothing is happening then what size fly do you usually start off with?

I always fish with two flies, one in a size 8 to 12 ,then a dropper fly that will be size 16-20 tied off the bend of the larger fly. If the fish takes the larger fly then I know and visa versa. Works for me,I use this technique for stillwater as well as river fishing.
When nymphing I usually also fish two flies but I seem to always start with the top fly being a size 16 and then work from there. If I am stripping a leech or wooly bugger I usually only fish one fly, usually a size 12 or 14. I have never thought of fishing two flies while stripping. Does anyone do strip two flies? When fishing dry flies I almost alway start with a size 16 and then go up or down from there. I just find that size 16 seems to work the best for me.

I guess it depends on where I'm fishing.
If I'm on the D during the spring (seldom happens anymore) I'll use three or sometimes 4 flies. Mostly, bigger stone flies with a #16 red copper john as a trailer. Those trout love stone flies.
If I'm on the fall, or Met, or some other place, I go smaller. #12 or #14 followed by a #16 or smaller nymph.
On lakes I seldom if ever fish two flies.
