I recently watched a video on the Underwater World of Trout – Feeding Lies. If you fish for salmonid in rivers or streams, you need to see this video.

The video is over an hour and consists of underwater views of trout. Where they hold in moving water (there are feeding lies, shelter lies and prime lies) and how they hold their positions.

I have watched the video twice now and each time I learned something new.

For instance, did you know the adipose fin on a trout is used like a “vortex generator” on an aircraft to increase the trout’s swimming efficiency?

Trout “take” twigs, leaves and algae on a regular basis. After “tasting” the object, it is quickly spit out. It makes me wonder why we are so concerned with matching the hatch when nymphing!

I got my copy over the Internet. The video is listed in the Kaufmann's catalog if you're in the Portland area. I'm sure you can find a copy with an Internet search; I got numerous "hits" on google.

I couldn't agree more. When nymphing detecting the strike is 9/10th's of the game. Match the hatch applies to dry fly/emerger fishing. Nymphs bounce along the bottem and are, by nature, made to resemble bottem debris....ie. the ones that don't look like food survive. Therefore those nymphs don't get eaten. Why do you think the nymphs are so drab in color? Good post.
