I'm looking to get a new reel for my 8wt. The Pflueger Trion has caught my attention. Anyone else use them? What do you think of them?

Thanks

I bought one recently on the recommendation of a steelhead guide that uses them in his business. His assessment is that they are tough, reliable, and a very good value. I had intended to get a used Hardy, but the Trion really appealed to me once I had a chance to compare it to other reels in the $100-$200 price range.

A word of caution: Although the literature claims the 7/8 model (#1978) can hold up to an 8-wt. line and 100 yards of backing, I found that my DT-6 and 100 yards of 20-lb. filled the spool.

Prices are all over the map. I paid $109 at a big box store, but noticed afterward that they can be purchased for $75-$80 online.

I bought a Trion a few years ago for my 8 weight single hander and it has worked flawlessly. In my opinion it has performed just as well, if not better, than some of the reels I have paid 2-3 times more for. The only drawback, as mentioned above, is they do not hold much backing. I say go for it unless you have plans to fish in B.C or anywhere where a large arbor and tons of backing are needed.

I have a friend that has one and he really likes it. One thing that I've done with reels that either aren't large arbor or that have a smaller arbor is to buy the next size up and load it with a lot of backing. The extra backing acts like a large arbor and you're never going to run short when you hook that record setter. If you get the standard backing, rather than gel spun, it takes up the extra space without adding a ton of extra weight.

Chrome,

I have 6 Trions and love them all. You even fished them when you borrowed the rods fro your trip on the D. The are great reels at a great price and I have had MANY fish on them. My only complaint would be the weight but I really don't notice too much. My 8wt got a bunch of exercise with winters all over Oregon. 15 to be exact :smash:

In short...I am for them:twocents:

Check out the new Summit, I think it is a nicer reel, a little lighter, machined, anodized Gold, and a little cheaper! I tried one out and they have a good drag, very smooth and strong. A little hard to find, but FISHERMAN'S had a few, and Angler's Workshop has them in their 2007 catalog update, and they say they should be in soon.

I have one and if you put WF line on it , the backing capacity is a little better. The other thing I like about is that it is pretty heavy and it balances my 10.5' one hander better than any other reel I own. I've had it for almost 3 years now and its a great reel.

I bought one for my spey rod and am very happy with it. I have an 11 wt. large arbor and for the money, it fishes like a million bucks. I use Okuma reels on my rod's I use for guiding but I plan on changing over to the Pflueger Trion reels. Pflueger has never impressed me with thier quality but I have changed my mind since comming out with the Trion line.

For an 8 wt. rod, do you guys use the 1978 (7/8 wt.) or the 1990 (8/10 wt.)?

Thanks - I was thinking the 1990 might be a bit on the heavy side if it was rated 8-10. I'll go with the 1978. Thanks!
