Has anyone fish for smallmouth on a speyrod? I haven't heard of it being done before. Can you go after the same fish you do on a single-handed rod or are speyrods only for bigger fish?

Sounds like OVERKILL to me. It would be kind of like fishing for 12" trout with a 10wt.

Just remember that the equivalent size in spey is two rod sizes up for a single hander. For instance a 8wt spey is equivalent to a 10wt single hand rod for most companies. Some of the newer trout spey rods would be fun for sure.
I have a friend that fished a six weight spey for both Shad and smallies on the East side of the Gorge. He does well and has a lot of fun casting long distances. I am going to give it a try for shad this year. Give it a try.

It's not overkill if you match your tackle to the size fish you're after. There are plenty of 2-hand rods out there that are designed for trout fishing....no reason those rods wouldn't work fine on bass.

I'll let you know when my 117 meiser gets to the sandy spey clave in may.
Just out of couriosity why would you want to use a two hander for small mouths? I am no expert but i have found they like lot's of action from the rod. The longer the rod the more difficult to add action. Swinging works but not all that well without big fast strips.
You can spey cast any one hander just go up a line size and use double taper.
I think it is just another opportunity to practice a style of fishing that one feels is enjoyable. I use my 8-9 on the Owyhee swinging streamers sometimes. I get valuable practice time in, and it is fun for me.
It might not be as effective, but I gotta learn how to fish it correctly someohow, and leaving it in the closet at home isn;t the way for that to happen.

A couple friends of mine use Speys in the 11'-12' 5/6 range on the Potomac and Shenandoah for smallies...don't know why it wouldn't work out here :)
