View Full Version : Hagg Lake Perch???s
Has the size of perch at Hagg ever increased? The perch used to be so small that a big one was 5", is it still the same out there?

I'll be there tomorrow in the early hours of the morning, I hope the fishing is good! I'll be after Trout and Bass.

Give it time. I usually fish for perch late in the season around July and August. I have done well and caught some about 5" on a regular basis just need that water to warm up. Good Luck fishing hope this helps

That's too bad, they're still so small. I remember many years ago it seemed like they were stunted due to so many of them in the lake, looks like things havn't changed. 5" is too small for me to mess with, unless I was REALLY hungry. Maybe if people took a few thousand of them out of the lake on a regulare basis we'd get them to grow a bit. I guess perch are the reason the Oregon state record smallmouth comes from Hagg eh? May also be the reason smallies are hard for me to catch when I've been at Hagg, just too much real forage to be going after my lures.

 Thanks guys,
I almost wasted fuel on a trip to chase the perch!:smash:
I'm thinking they need some pike muskie or walleye to cull those stunted dwarfs, but I seriously doubt anyone will put a real fish in with sissy pre-handled trout..errrr I mean those magnificent, hatchery raised Purina purebreds ...lol... it was just a passing thought.

Go hit up Lk Wa if you are ever up in seattle! Lots of fatties in there that probably wouldn't mind eating a 5"er or their own!

there are lots of bigger perch. ive caught many in the 9-11" range, the secret is to get into the deeper water, if your catching small fish go deeper till you find a school of larger perch. ive never caught many in any one trip, but two of us got about 24 one afternoon with a few assorted bass, trout, bluegill and a small catfish to boot

How do you fish for the perch in the deeper water? How do you target the big ones?

in lake washington alot of people put big weights on and cast out as far as they can then they just slowly reel in until they find the school.

If you find a school of small ones there are sometimes bigger solitary ones on the "fringe" of the small school. Deeper seems to the be key again.

we used a 1/8oz beetlespin like lure with a piece of nightcrawler on it. the hook was too big for the 5 inchers to get their mouth on.

This one is one of the biggest 4 or 5 we've caught over the years, we usually won't keep them until they're hitting about 9".
