Took my canoe to Henry Hagg with my wife today. The weather started out very nice--we were thinking "good thing we brought the sunscreen!"--but with 45 minutes of getting out there it clouded up and rained on and off. There were also some crosswinds that kept turning the canoe that we dealt with the whole time, but it was still a great time for our first time to HH. The water was pretty warm, too.
Paula got a 13" bass about 30 minutes in with a black and gray shad rap. (It was her first ever bass, too!) After unhooking it and putting it into the cooler, on her very next cast, into the very same spot, she hooked up with another bass in the same spot! We got it almost to the boat, but it wiggled off at the last second! Eventually, we started working our way back and I put on an orange perch shad rap. A few casts in, I'm pulling the lure back toward the boat as the wind turned the canoe, and suddenly, a huge trout floats up and snatches it. I was probably in the worst possible angle for the hook set, but I thought I had it. It started taking a little line and suddenly, it comes up to the surface about 6 feet from the boat so I could get a good look at it before it, too, wiggled off! I'd say it was about a fat 15" trout.
About 20 minutes later, the rain finally got the better of us and convinced us that 1-3 was as good as we were going to do. So we decided to call the game and head in. :smash:
