While sitting in the boat on Saturday and watching all the people catching fish, I realized that soon they won't be and contemplated the hope for a ground swell. Who can get worked up over nothing ie. poor fish runs. But we are getting the shaft. And I hope apathy of the past turns to frustration and anger in the masses, as the largest and most productive fishery of my 31 yrs swims by Portland at a clip of 20k per day.
My brother plus two uncles, novices, hooked 9 today April 16, 2001 and kept 5. So Wednesday, the masses will be sidelined, to watch native fish being indiscriminately killed by those who attest to being the guardian of the great mother earth. Aren't you disgusted oh great white/black/yellow/brown hunter. The guardians say there is no other way. Yet the state test nets and uses up our allocation. There is a way aside from gill nets yet the guardians resist. The guardians say they are being fair yet reap the majority of benefit from the efforts due to our licenses, taxes and dams. Yet again they do not clip fins from the hatcheries managed by them paid for by our tax dollars.
Don't let the federal government short-change us next year! Our paltry allocation is disgusting. They have sold us out with U.S. Dept. of the Interior Secretarial Order #3206. The entire order can be access on the internet at http://endangered.fws.gov/esatribe.html (thanks RT) I am confident that there will be a repeat fishery next year. Yes the stars are still aligned. Ocean conditions were still good for the next brood year and so were the releases from the Corps. But unless YOU, we all, do something we will be side lined again at the peak of the run next year. Again, destined to scurry around like a hungry little rat aboard a sinking ship. This is a call to arms per say. It is time to be heard. As said in the earlier posts tell your friends. Call officials and write your representatives, write the paper in an editorial. If you own a boat, you at least, owe it to yourself to make your voice heard. Let’s not let the disappointment that will be felt near the end of this week go to waste as boats sit in driveways while 20k go by. Frown
