I was able to sneak out for half a days fishing when we were in Sunriver last week. I didn't want to join the crowds at the Fall River so I decided to check out the Ana River. It was 93 miles each way so I used up three hours just getting there and back.

I arrived at about Noon and fished from the lower bridge all the way up where it comes out below the dam. I had the place to myself, whick made it worth the gas. I would always rather have the place to myself and catch a couple than catch a bunch in a crowd.

Anyway, there were caddis all over the place when I started with no rises at all. I did my best to kneel and hide due to the high sun, and clear water. I could not get a rise or tug out of all the nymphs, wets, chronos tied to my 7x leader. I started to question if there were fish there at all! Finally, I figured the sunlight had the fish hiding in hard to reach places so I found the deepest pool I could find and tied on my favorite black wooley bugger and took a 14" and a 17" in about 20 minutes time. Other than that I could never find or see feeding fish. I left at about 5:30 scratching my head, but still really enjoying the high desert scenery and the solitude.

On the way back the road way blocked by a cattle drive complete with 300 head and eight cowboys! I saw deer, a couple of antelope and a coyote. It was truly just what the doctor ordered for this "City Slicker"

Thanks for the report. Several years ago you could find fish rising every where. The fishing was fast and fun for some nice fat trout. At that time it was a fly and lure only stream. I think that change and the fishing declined.

Thanks! Caught my first couple of 20" ++ fish there years ago. Should have stopped at the cowboy diner for a huge meal.
