I've been fishing Oregon waters since 1984, sturgeon and salt water excepted, largely without success. I came here with a lifetime of dedicated fishing (and spearfishing) experience in all kinds of waters for everything from bluegill to marlin. I've since done my homework and knew the techniques, timing, and gear to use here. Although I've done OK with Coho and steelhead, since '84, I've managed to hook only three Chinook, usually when I least expected it (like fly fishing for steelhead on 8-12 lb. tipets in fast moving small rivers; good freaking luck). In that time I've spent thousands on tackle and gear, and even thoroughly rebuilt a very worthy boat. Easter Sunday 2001 bright the first big payoff, finally!
Today, up at Bonneville with my girlfriend Lynda, we witnessed and took part in a slaughter of epic proportion. Arriving there at 8am, we had three fish hooked so quickly we didn't even have time to cook, let alone eat our breakfast. By 11a we had hooked 8 Chinook, boated 6, and had two limits in the boat. All keepers were bright roe bearing hens ranging from 16-25 lbs. The bite was so tremendous that up until about noon, you could not turn around and see at least one boat drifting back with a fish on at any time. We even had one double, and I finally got to deverginize my Limaglass bait casting rod after three years of waiting (5 times in three hours, no less). Probably every boat there (surprisingly few, maybe 50) limited out by noon. I'll wager there are a quarter million fish stacked up behind the dam right now, and if not for my late arrival and current limits, I could have come home with at least 200lbs of salmon, no sweat.
Most people were trolling Quickfish with divers, whereas we had no luck with them . (We started with one Wigglewart and one Quickfish, and after three bites all on the Wigglewart, switched both poles to them). All of our fish were taken back-bouncing on the bottom with Wigglewarts (silver and anything) very close to shore (just beyond bank angler range) right above Tanner Creek. Erratic movements also played a part, two of our hookups came when I jerked the sinkers off the bottom to check the placements.
Special thanks goes out to my friend John, aka "Pilar", whithout whom today's success would not have been possible. He showed up at my door a couple years ago with a story about having the same boat, and wanting to see my PVC system. My 'on it's last leg' recently purchased for pocket change boat had a blown engine and a rotted hull. John, having completely from the outter shell up, restored the very same year, make, model, engine, outdrive, color boat, helped me do the same with mine, starting with a bored/balanced/blueprinted engine rebuild. (What he doesn't know about the Mercruiser 140 drive system you might find carved in the walls in your nearest public restroom). He even explained to me how to gut and relay my saturated and rotted hull (filled 8 trash cans with what used to be my boat, a-la smoking chainsaw, and then outdid the manufacturer with new wood and fiberglass). He's right, the "bend IS your friend", and all the itching out of my mind, fiberglass contaminated in the middle of last June's heatwave, sweat and blood was worth it. Thanks again, ****head!
As 'Awnold' would say, come Tuesday morning, "I'll be back!". I answer to "Adrianna" on Ch 16; please say hello but stay the he** outta my spot!
