i went their today to buy a new rod and reel and so i pick out a shimano curado and a wright and migill rod. It seems like every time i buy a reel i have to pick it up from customer service. thats cool and all, even though i see them let others walk around with their reel. but then when i went to pay for my stuff i had an old man come up to check inside my rod case that came with my pole! what kind of BS was that man. I will never shop their again. This fries my frenchfries. I never had a problem going to sportsmen warehouse, they actually make me feel like a customer and let me walk around with my reel.

Hey, I know how you feel- the same thing has happened to me but I always think that's how they keep their prices down if they stay vigilant on that stuff. It's amazing how much stuff does get jacked and you never know who's doing it. Don't take personal- it's just random. Sounds like you got a good set-up- nice job. Dave

kind of reminds me of when I went to buy this laptop at fry's. I made all through the sales pitches of extended warranty's and the salesman ask me if I am sure I can afford to pay for the thing, I know I am young and it is a decent sized chunk of change but I asked for it I think I can pay for it........

if somebody asked me if i could afford to pay for something i wouldnt buy it from them! I would ask for another sales person so they get the commision.
hunter9 i also think it was random. maybe they have had a theft problem and now its mandatory  i wouldnt take it personal.

Wow, asking me if I can afford it would definitely sour the deal. Though I don't think I would have thought quickly enough on my feet to demand a different sales associate, I just would have bought it somewhere else entirely.
And hunter9, I'd almost take being treated like that a compliment. Now that I don't look as young and dangerous as I used to I definitely don't get that treatment nearly as much. :-)

15 or so years ago I took my wife into the columbia blvd fishermans to pick out a pair of ultralite setups looked around for a bit then went to the counter & waited for 10+ minutes as the counter guy swaped lies with his buddy, told the wife lets go & on the way out I made sure to stop & tell the mgr. why we were leaving MT handed & that I would never return to spend $ with them agian & I have not. the only way I have to communicate is with my $'s and I am more then willing to take them to his competator's. for me service is more important the price.

I've been quite happy with Fisherman's. In fact, they've kept at least one great bass fisherman around to make sure that they're carrying the right supplies for bass anglers. I've been there in a suit and tie purchasing reels (recently) and had the reel salesman carry them to the front checkout counter for me. So, don't take anything personally. We're fortunate to have some well stocked places like Fisherman's and Sportsman's here and I'd sure like them to continue to do garner support from the bass fishing community.

Jaybee, I think you are being a little liberal with the words, "well stocked", especially when it comes to bass fishing gear. Too many times, I have not been able to find what I would like to purchase at Sportsman's or Fisherman's.
I have however always been treated with respect at Fisherman's. I was unaware of the customer service gig when buying a reel. I have not gotten one there for some time. Intend to look at casting rods next week. Hope their stock of Lami's is plentiful.

Its not the reel that im mad about. Its the fact that two staff followed me to register and one or them look inside my rod case as if i stole something. Now the rod case came with my rod.He even waited their until i was done paying for it. At the moment i kind of not cared about it.I was just like dam i just spend 700 bucks on a jacket, shoe, and a fishing pole/reel.

it's a dumb policy to allow eager to pay customers to walk out mt handed because your employees would rather B.S. with thier friends than provide customer service. last time I looked the purpose of a store was to make a profit not to chase it away.

I've been in that situation before at Fishermans, Joe's is right next door. On occasion you'll get , I guess, one of the newbies that find you and chat and help you real well though. I don't know names but, two of the long time employees, old guys at the reel counter, will stand there and not even look at you.
The solution to this I believe is to have a few $100.00 bills hanging out of your pockets, in full view.

I went to buy a winter-weight sleeping bag at REI's clearance sale in Portland a few months ago. Wandering around, I spotted a nice Marmot 0 degree goose down bag for $150 bucks (regularly 350). Opening the cotton "air out" sack that it comes in (stuff sack inside), I found that someone had replaced the nice marmot down bag with a cheapo REI house brand synthetic.
By switching sacks they got a $150 bag (regularly $350) for $50 bucks.
I can see how Fishermen's would be concerned about people doing the same thing with rods.

I find the bass rod selection at the local retail stores pretty spotty. None of them carry what I'd consider to be a complete line of bass rods, that is unless you want an 8'+ bass rod ;-). I'd just head up the road another 20 miles or so and go to Lamiglas directly. They also have used/blemished rods there for about 1/2 price but they don't include the warranty.
G. Loomis is right across the highway from Lami as well. I don't think you can buy directly from Loomis but at least you can have them bring out any rod in their line so you can check it out.
Nice to have those two around even though the local shops don't stock full lines.
