I would like to fish the ocean but need a craft that won't break the bank (under 10K). I presently have a 14 ft protected water boat that has a 25hp and a 4.5 kicker. I don't need fancy, just a sound fishing machine that I can tow behind a 6 cyl toyota truck. The season is quickly approaching....recommendations and insight is appreciated.

You're gonna find a billion ocean worthy boats for under 10k. Hope that helps... images/icons/grin.gif

Hi Marty, I couldn't find what I wanted so I restored/modified one to order. Sal is right, there are a ton of used boats that with a little TLC could take you to big blue and back with ease.

The real thing is to have a clear set of things you need in the boat. What kind of fishing do you want to do with how many people? I did this by going on other boats and making a list of the things I liked about each boat. Then try to find something used that you can get for cheap.

It really helps if you want to get your hands dirty. Boat owners can be easily overwhelmed by expensive repairs and give up on an otherwise sound craft. Then they sell out for whatever $$$ they can get. A savvy do it yourself guy can get a bargain and make it right.

Here's the list I shopped with.

Fuel economy
Reliable inboard/outboard power plant
Large fuel tank
Seats at least 3 comfortably
Minimum 18 Ft.
Anything but wood hull, prefer fiberglass
Closed high bow, (Dry boat)
High gunwales and transom
2 of everything

This list is incomplete but you get the idea.

Good luck and go fishing with your buddies.
