I am leaving next Saturday for a week long trip to Troy, MT. I have been there to visit in laws a few times before and had a chance to fish a few spots. This will be the first trip that I will be packing the fly rod along. In the past I borrowed their gear and fished lures. I will be primarily fishing the Kootenai River. If open, I will fish the Yaak river for a chance at catching one of the beautiful native trout that reside there. My father in-law is an avid fisherman who always takes me to excellent fishing locations. He is primarily a bait fisherman so I have been trying to compile a list of necessary flies for rivers and/or lakes in northwestern Montana. This weekend I tied up about 100 flies including some adams, various midge lifestages, elk hair caddis, royal wulff, sparkle dun, thunder creek rainbow, and parachute adams. I also have an extensive collection of flies to fall back on since I tie my own flies. If anyone has some specific recommendations for early April patterns let me know.
