Beef liver, all the way. Stays on the hook better then chicken liver. Worms work good too but you get too many little guys with 'em. Cut bait can also be very effective and is a great way to get rid of Squaw Fish. Any type of bait I use, I always dip in some garlic stink 'em.

TDTF,

I'm with you on the shad - especially the entrails! :food:

A real sleeper is soft shell crawfish IF you find them, keep them in the fridge until ready to use. Packed in burlap or layers of wetted newspaper, they'll hold for days. If nothing else, use the sports section to pack them in so you have something to read while waiting for Mr Wiskers.

 BTW Mr. Smallmouth has an affinity for softies too!

Yup! Anything fishy and smelly should work. Caught an 8 pounder last year in the Willy that spit up an 8 inch squaw fish. The only Cat we kept to give to a friend had a huge crawdad in it's belly. Pretty much anything you can catch a sturgeon on will work for Cats.

With that said, after trying cut bait(squaw and bluegill), cured herrings, nightcrawlers, catfish nuggets(the worst), hot dogs soaked in garlic, prawns, trout guts mixed into a dough ball, etc. none of them stacked up to the success we had with beef liver. There's something about that blood that drives 'em nuts.

You are definitely a cat man! I was surprized you weren't catching schoolies with the liver as those pesky dudes can really chase blood baits. Have you caught any big'uns on the liver??? Oh one last thing...whatever you do, don't let everyone know about using parmesan cheese to their baits...you know how that would decimate the fishery!!! (wink)
