I am so devastated. Today I hooked a giant, it had to have been 10+ pounds. I saw the fish inside a over hanging bush, she was atleast 30 inches long. She took my bait and dragged it to the bottom of the lake. Then she hung and stripped the line on some branches. I could see her about eight feet below, when she turned to her side she look a milk jug. Then she broke my line. I feel like this is one of the most dissapointing days i ever had fishing. Atleast I managed to pull out a 4 pounder, which I released.

hunter9: If you are using anything less than 20lb mono and not changing your line before each trip, it's not a matter of IF you are going to break a big fish off, it's just a question of how many.

Hunter9 stay clear of the polomar knots, they tend to break.Good luck!

Palomar is what i have used for a long time and it's worked great most the time but still whenever i set the hook and snap the knot i just think of how big that fish could have been. Have you guys heard anything on the double palomar i saw it on tv the other day and was thinking of trying it out?

It's better to have hooked and lost than to never hooked at all :)

Bassin 87,Palomar is a great knot or double palomar for braids it's the only way to go.Mono on the other hand, I would still stay away from using it.It seems we have better results with clinch knots,we tie and inspect all of our grear the night before.Take the time to retie you never can tell on the next cast you may hook THE ONE!!!!!!! Go big ,fish big, catch big,Fluke

The guides on your rod may have some hidden nicks that weaken your line. you can check by rubbing a cotton ball around and inside your guides, and then sand and polish any rough areas.

I got one of these pole from my girlfriends stepfather and this pole kicks bass... its thye most sensitive pole I have ever had and it is absolutely beautiful. They do a great job with their wraps. I caught a 11 pound trout out of Hagg with it and hooked into some nice steelhead with it. I caught a 3 pound bass off of it but I havent managed to hit anything bigger...YET.

Man, I have a hard time believing a Palomar knot combined with mono is at fault here. That's all I ever used with mono for sturgeon, including oversize, 25 lb line. I've never seen anything close to a knot failure with it. Come to think of it, that's all I use with mono (except on hooks).

I'd look elsewhere for the failure.

Matt: I have never broken a palomar, either. Ten bucks says it was too light of line and fished too many times. Dave

Sorry to hear about the lose.

I can't believe how big of line you guys use. Heck 8lb maxima is all I've ever used for steelhead and 14lb for walleye on the troll. But hey these are just little 10lb steelies.
Shoot Dave, I have 25lb P-Line on my Tuna casters!

Can't say I've ever lost a fish due to line breakage...and that is with a std cinch knot. (slack is always my enemy) More likely you didn't wet your knot and burned the line tightening it or it was frayed.

The palomor is even a stronger knot.
