View Full Version : Any comments on FLYLogic reels?
I'm looking at upgrading reels, but after spending millions of dollars on fly tying stuff for my upcoming trip, I'm cash limited. I'm looking for input on FlyLogic reels FLP and FLA models. FLO models are a bit out of my price range...

I had to look up the reel on the Internet, so I obviously can't give you an opinion:redface: !
In that price range, you can also look at the Cabela's LSR, the Loomis Venture and the Pflueger Trion. I've heard positive things about both the Cabela's and Pflueger reels.

Nothing wrong with fly logic gear, the reels are your standard disc drag reel.

I've got one on a 5/6 FlyLogic rod, but not sure of the model. The drag is decent, but I don't like the plastic components. I've got a couple of Lamson Litespeed reels and the quality of the FlyLogic reel doesn't even come close. I bought the FlyLogic reel as part of a spare/loaner setup-- think I'd rather find cheap sturdy click-and-pawl or nicer used reel before buying another cheap disc drag with plastic parts. That's my .02, however, I've never had any performance issues with FlyLogic reel either.

I have a FLP reel on a 5/6 set-up for trout. No complaints from me (had it maybe 2-3 years). In that price range, I also looked at the GLoomis Venture series, but chose the FlyLogic because it seemed a bit lighter (although I don't have numbers to back that up), I prefer the vented backside (since i'm the type who puts stuff away wet from time to time meaning to take care of it later...), and I thought the enameled finish wouldn't show scratches as much as the clear metal finish. I can't say I've used it a whole lot, since I usually focus on steelhead instead of trout, but I did manage to haul in an old ~15lb springer while nymphing the McKenzie a couple Septembers ago and the drag performed just fine. I understand the comment about plastic parts, but it has not been any liability for me (although I did get a Tioga for steelhead, FWIW).
I went with the Orvis Battenkill Mid Arbor with 300 yards of Gelspun backing bimini twist looped to 20 yards of 30 pound dacron that is attached to my bonefish line. It looks nice, and for 125 bucks it fit my price range nicely. Good warantee. smooth drag. I think this dog will hunt.

Several other friends have made similar claims about both the older and newer model Battenkills. Good reels for the money-- tough to beat. Good luck and thanks for posting your decision.
