My buddy just got a smallish fishing boat (17') and its powered with a 60 yami and a t-8. I think its plenty of motor for the boat as its an open aluminum type. We have been having a real hard time getting up on step, even trimmed all the way under and my 275# sitting in the bow! The only thing I can think is the fuel tank is underfloor in the rear of the boat, its 22 gallons. What can we do to get this thing up on step quicker without doing major mods? Thanks for any help.

Maybe a dole fin would help get it on plane. Maybe the motor isn't enough for the boat. What is the boat rated at?

1st what are the make and model? Also Is it a prop, or a 60 pumped down?

Add up the total weight of the boat, motor, gas, accessories, people aboard, tackle...everything. Divide this number by 30, and you get the motor horsepower needed to go 30 mph. For example, if the weight is 1500 pounds, then 1500 pounds, then 1500/30=50 horsepower needed to go 30 mph.
It sounds like there may be something wrong with the motor, or maybe the prop pitch is wrong

My older 115 HP Evinrude 2 stroke pushed my boat much faster than the new 115 Yamaha 4 stroke (by GPS ) so that isn't true.

Sounds like it's got the power to plane, just not very quickly. Try a lower pitched prop.

Yup, lower pitch prop and a doelfin or hydrofoil stabilizer.

The boat is a new G3 aluminum open style with a tiller. The yami is brand new and runs like a top! Once its on step it boogies (38 per GPS) it just takes a little time to get up. I would guess its somewhere in the neighborhood of 7-10 boat lengths at full throtle to plane. I think we will try a doelfin first and then go from there. Thanks for the help.

Do you have any idea what the RPM is at 38mph. You might be able to go with a four blade prop. I don't know if they make one for a motor that small. I am not a big fan of the foils or fins. I know some people swear by them and have had good luck. My friend put one on his searay and when pulling him as a skier he could pull that boat on its side. (not fun) I put one on my 17' proped sled and it took 4 mph of the top and made it squirrelly. Generally 3 blade props run in odd numbers and fours in evens you may able to drop a little pitch and get hole but have less top end but 38 is cooking in a G3. Call the dealer they will let you try different props if you bring it back perfect. The last thing I would do is drill holes in my cavitation plate.
