I'm getting ready to buy new motors for my old boat and the question is merc or yamaha. The choice is a 4 stroke 115 merc or 4 stroke 115 yamaha. for a kicker it is 9.9 exlpt 4 stroke merc or a t 8 exlpt 4 stroke. The yamaha is 200 cheaper so cost is not really an issue. Just did not really know which one has a better rep. Kind of a dumb question just wanted INPUT.

Yamaha, and if their available from your dealer look at Suzukis also.
I wouldn't put a Merc on my boat if it was given to me.

I've owned 2 mercs (1 large and 1 kicker), a honda kicker, two yamahas (1 large and one T8), and three Evinrudes (two large and one kicker). No question, my two favorite motors have both been Yamahas.

If I remember correctly the merc and yamaha 115s share the same yamaha power head.

I agree. Everything I've ever read is that Merc bought the powerhead from Yamaha and put their lower unit and logo on it. If that is your choice (and they're great engines, I have both the Yamaha 115 and 8), then I'd think it would come down to the local dealership you would most trust with maintenance down the road, and the overall dealership network where you might find yourself down the road someday on a fishing trip.

Put me on the Yamaha bandwagon. Granted we do seem to have a disproportionate number of Yamaha dealers in the northwest, but I have a year old Yami 115 and T8 and love them both. That 115 starts on the 1st key turn with no choking even in 5 degree weather. The T8 has about 300 hours on it now and I would never be without the electric start and power trim.:twocents:

I've got an '06 Merc 115 4stroke, and an '03 Merc 9.9 4stroke. I love 'em, but I couldn't agree more with fish-on-bend! Whichever way you go, get the electric start and power trim for your kicker. I didn't, and I regret it.....

Yamaha is the only way to go. Talk to PPM and you may be able to get the 6 year warranty, which they offered at the boat show. That sold me!!
Good Luck

If you want to hear what a motor blowing up sounds like, buy a Mercury.......

Yamaha!! No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Very reliable and seem to be quieter than merc even though the powerhead may be similar.:twocents:

Just a little info on the new Mercury motors. As of this year the 115 is no longer a Yamaha powerhead with a Mercury low end. They are now a 100% Mercury. The 75-115 are now a Verado based engine just lacking the supercharger. So you will get a motor that is bult for 175hp but only putting out 115. Sounds like a motor that will last to me. It also still came in lighter than the Yamaha. I was on the fence as well between Yamaha and Mercury and decided to go Mercury. So far the motor is working really well. Very quite, great hole shot and overall good power. So far so good....
Another Yamaha fan here. Had a Merc once and never again.
