I was wondering if anyone here had this done or knows someone:

What should I figure for costs to have a new F.I. Chevy (375hp) or 351 Ford installed in my older Alumaweld Formula Vee that now has a carb 351?

I would keep the 3 stage Hamilton pump, but would want the motor, new wiring harness, dash and throttle/reverse gate cables & controls.

I know L&J Hydraulics does this, but who else in the PDX area?

My reason for looking at this is both for better fuel economy and better performance when under a heavy load. Am I on the right track or should I look at a new Hamilton 212 and keep the motor (which runs fine)?

Thanks for the help!!

If I remember an article correctly, EFI was only marginally more fuel efficient than 4 barrel carburetors (when compared to the late 90s Vortec 350s and EFI 351s), except the Rochester 4 barrel carb with it's huge secondaries. It burned by far the most fuel at higher rpm. On the primaries it was similar to the other carburetors and EFI.

The biggest advantage was ease of starts, especially cold ones.

My guess is you can buy a lot of fuel for the difference in price of EFI vs Carb. I don't know much about the different pumps, but that sounds like the better choice if you are going to spend money somewhere.

I would think that the cost of going to a 212 would be be more than the entire engine swap. I'm just guessing though.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Your looking at a lot of $ for a little of nuthin in return. Maybe check with pump mfg. about changing impellors. You can buy a lot of fuel for what you are talking about.:twocents:

Contact KEM (Kodiak Engineering Marine). (503) 692-5012 They do engines and probably can help with an installation source. They can also give you very valuable advice on how to greatly increase the perfromance of your current three stage pump. They have a replacement intake grate and a different third impellor which do great things when installed on a three stage pump.

If your existing motor is fine the new one will never save enough fuel to cover its costs. Run the **** out of what you have then replace it when you have to.
