I'm not sure if I have a grounding problem on my Northriver or not.

I have a 12 volt test light. I attached 1 end to the positive side of the battery, and one to the hull. (Light comes on).

I began connecting 1 ground wire at a time to see which ground(s) would give me a light.

1st up: The big engine (Yami 150). Light turns on. But then I thought, that makes sense. The negative is attached to the engine block, so it must feed back through the offshore bracket etc.

2nd up: Main grounding block... Light comes on.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as all switches are in the off position... I shouldn't have a complete path there should I?

I could just use some basic help here. I thought that nothing should be running through the hull and that all ground had to go via a cable, back to the battery.

Thanks in advance! :)

I don't think you have a problem... all your accessories should be wired to a common ground, but then the hull should be grounded as well. So you will definitely show a potential between your battery positive and your hull.

Follow this link to Pro Troll. The actual talks mainly about hoohin up a down rigger but has some useful info about a boats electrical charge. this charge can repel fish as well. it give some good insight on effective grounding does and dont's.

hello, from what you discribe you do not have a problem. by having the hull grounded to the negative buss you have created a ground path and that is all. this just brings the hulls potential to 0 volts. ok so that may be too much info. but you do not have a problem.
