I had a friend that bought a used boat, with V-8 power I/O unit and we tried to troll with it and of course it was way too fast, and he had a plastic 5 gallon bucket in it. We just tied a rope on to the handle and threw it out behind the boat. Now I know this is crude but it worked and we used it several times before he got a "real" trollong plate. Any improvements that you can make will make it work better, go for it!:smash:

If I need to go slower, I'll tow a bucket or a sea anchore.

Fishkisser,
I don't mean to jump your thread but it may be info other might be able to use and it seems silly to satrt another thread so close on the same subject........as there are several sizes of sea anchors, what size might do the trick for a 15ft aluminum with a 25hp?
Thanks,
Kevin

Fishkisser,
I have an Arima Sea Ranger 19 and my kicker is a Honda 15. I use 2 buckets to slow down a lot and 1 to slow down a little. added benefit is when crabbing, I fill the buckets with clear water and bring it home to boil the crabs in.
Cheers

You tie a couple of feet of rope to a cleat and then a bucket (I drill holes in mine but I don't thing you have to do that) While trolling, the bucket and rope are pulled tight so the bucket sits a few feet behind the boat and never hits the bottom.
You had asked about the sea anchors (the high class version of the bucket) I would get two small ones for your setup. This will allow you to have better control if you use them on anchor.

I guess i should have clarified. I've heard of guys tying the buckets off the front ot the boat to drag underneath the boat so that they don't snag up with their lines behind the boat. I thought they might bounce off the bottom of the boat making alot of noise. I'll pass on the worms.

Kalamath,
my boat is an Arima and when dragging plastic buckets, they just rest along side and they don't bang at all, but an aluminum hull might make some noise I suppose. I use about 5ft rope and tie to a side cleat. makes it easy to retrieve them too.

Yea I'll probably end up with a sea anchor in the long run ... It will be cheaper than buying a smaller prop for my T8 .. It pushes my boat just a little too fast for my liking ... Will test the bucket brake this next week and see how she works , thanks guys as usual your the coolest...

Never heard of any one tying them off up front. It sure isn't a thing I would try.
