I think I've come up with my most brilliant idea yet this week. As soon as I finish my scuba certifications I'm going to get a tattoo (can't get one now since the tattoo must remain out of salt water and chlorine for 7-10 days-hopefully foshing doesn' count) anyways, I'm going to get a fish and want to put some sort of saying or quote around it. I've come up with a few ideas but want to see what else is out there. Here's what I've got so far:
Shall I go to heaven or a-fishing? ... Henry David Thoreau
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot.
--Steven Wright
"I am haunted by water." -- Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It
Some go to church and think about fishing, others go fishing and think about God.
- Tony Blake

Description of fishing: " A jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other"

"I communicate with fish by dropping them a line."

"Fishing is not a matter of life and death, it's more important than that."

"Old fisherman never die, they just smell that way."

"There is no use in your walking five miles when you can depend on being just as unsuccessful near home." Mark Twain

"Fisherman are born honest, but they get over it." Ed Zern

"No angler merely watches nature in a passive way. He enters into its very existence" John Bailey

The best one of all is:

My idea was always to get the salmon carcass/skeleton tattoo, a la Ray Troll, then put "SPAWN TILL YOU DIE" around it.

"When the going gets tough, the tough go fishing."

"Everyone should believe in something; I believe I'll go fishing."

"Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in."

for tattooing you probably want to keep it simple, how about my very favorite ...

Two thirds of the earth is covered with water, I will therefore spend two thirds of my time fishing.

(A bit lengthy - but appropriate) I liked your Tony Blake quote the best "Some go to church and think about fishing, some go fishing and think about God. I'm going to start telling my wife that one!

"Shut up and fish" "Just Fish It". Second one is my logo, but you can use it.
If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.

I've got a fish tattoo and I can assure you that you don't want more than 3 words under/ around it unless this particular tattoo is going to grace your back(side).

I wanted a leaping steelhead and looked all manner of places for styles and pix. Finally settled on the tasteful steelhead that graces the front of a Great Alaskan Bush Company T-shirt (the one with the topless women riding a winter fish like a bucking bronco). Regrettably, the wife (code name "Old Buzzard") was present so the artist had to drop the chick off the back.

I didn't get any words ("Fish or die!" seemed a bite heavy), but have an indelible black fine line marker. Before heading to Alaska I'll pen in something appropriate that should last the trip. Next destination, a few new words (assuming the old ones wear off).

One final piece of advice. DON'T let your wife/ woman negotiate the price with the tattoo artist while he's doing the tattoo! "What?!! You want how much for that??!! How about knocking $50 off the price??" Artist, "Lady, if that's all you want to pay I'm done right now." Me, "No, no, FINISH THE FISH -- IT DOESN'T HAVE A TAIL!"

Women . . . .

Whatever you decide, my advice is to TAKE YOUR TIME!! Remember, a tatoo is forever. Looking back on it now, the first idea I had for a tatoo would have been a let-down (fish bones). The tatoo I did get was drawn by a good friend and has real meaning to me, along with being just amazing art. Ive had it since '93 and have never regretted it. I still enjoy looking at it.

10 years down the road, will you still be happy with it? Thats the kind of thing to think about =). Words are a difficult thing to incorporate well into a tatoo. You may find that you are happier with just the art.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck on choosing your tattoo.

Matt

P.S. You going for color or B&W?

Someone told me......

"Fishing consists of a line, with a Jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other."

Give a man a fish he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he drinks beer all day while fising.
