My friends, the local rumor mill hear that springer fishing around Cathlamet is "killer" and tell me to go and just find a hogline to get into. Don't have a clue even where to start that far downriver. Can anyone help. Where to launch the boat, where to go to find the hoglines, how much water to fish etc, etc. etc?????

Any help appreciated

Sheesh, it's not that hard. A hog line is a bunch of boats lined up parallel to each other. Just figure out where the 12 foot depth is and wedge your way between two boats, tie off on their side rails and say "Howdy"! Folks are much friendlier down river. ...or not. That lovely white ship of yours might get scratched. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

There is a good launch right in the town of Cathlamet. When you exit the harbor just head downriver and you will see the pack of boats dead ahead of you. Get in the middle of em', go down river from, up river from em' I really don't think it matters right now!!! Like Pete says 12' seems to be the magic number from what I have seen and heard.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif

Pete,
You must fish OC too much! images/icons/wink.gif Most of the hoglines I've fished in on the Columbia don't get close enough to tie off to each other. There is usually a boat width or two between boats. And yes, most of the folks are real nice.

I can't help with a ramp on the Washington side, but if you go upriver from Cathlamet to sandy island near Trojan, there is a line of pilings on the Washington side of the island. Go to the upriver side of the island and join the hogline. Their friendly and almost always make room. I pulled up last Friday and watched 4 hatchery fish caught in 1 hour. The action didn't stop all day. Two boats limited and everyone had at least one fish.

With the rain coming down I imagine fishing upriver is only going to get better also. Iput in at Gobel on the Oregon side. It takes five minutes to get to the pilings if that.

Everyone is using kfish in that hogline. Various colors, Red, silver and red doesn't seem to maetter much.

I'll be there thursday or friday after the tide gets back to normal.

Good luck

P.S. I believe there is a ramp in Longview very close to were the gobel ramp is on the Oregon side. But I have not been there. images/icons/cool.gif images/icons/cool.gif

There is a ramp at Goble, however the county dumped a load of gravel on the ramp. I hear a big hole at the bottom of the ramp was causing problems. There also is a ramp in Raineer, but a fairly long run up river to get near Goble.

So as not to confuse the man. Some are confusing Kalama with Cathlamet. Kalama is upstream from Longview. Cathlamet is downstream from Longview. Both places have had good action oin the last week. There is a ramp on Oregon side at Westport just west Of Clatskanie on Hwy 30. Also a ramp at Cathlamet on the Washington side west of Longview. Most of the action has been below Cathlamet and yes you will see the groups of boats. they are all friendly and will fill you in on the info. Good fishin!

Thanks all, especially Capn Hook for the city clarifications. I was confused as I was sure Goble was accross fro Kalama where I often launch. Will be out Friday, hope the bite improves. images/icons/smile.gif

Boater, I will launch at the Kalama ramp that is along I-5. It is about a mile upstream from the mouth of the Kalama river. Very nice ramp, and its free! images/icons/smile.gif

What about even farther down? I'll be in the Astoria/Long Beach area this weekend (I keep my boat there). Do I need to head up to Cathlamet to have a chance at a Springer?

[Delurk post; I've been reading the discussions and decided to jump in. Hi all!]
