Fly fished the Crooked (in the canyon by Prineville) this past Saturday, and it is worth the trip. Got there early and pulled a few white fish out of a deep pool (I hate those fish...no fight at all for their size). Around 11 we went further up to an area with a decent current and tons of rocks in it. Started nymphing, but quickly realized the rainbows were coming top side. A report on another site mentioned going with BWO's for now, and let me tell you, HOLY CRAP they were right!
Hooked into a ton of trout, a few that were damned nice size for what I was expecting (14 inches). And they quickly made up for the short coming of the White Fish...these guys will fight...especially the little ones!
Anyway, if you are going there, there is a major Blue Wing hatch from 11-1. As quickly as it starts though, it ends and slows down. They will still come up, but not like 11-1 (literally they are coming up EVERYWHERE!!!).
Email me at jpw@teleport.com if you want to know exactly where we were getting them. Like I said, my friend and I both caught a few big ones! Nice trip all in all...and a beautiful area! images/icons/grin.gif
Also....Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts on the St. Croix rods.
