I was looking at some Loomis GL2 rods at the local tackle shop. I noticed that they had changed their appearance. Instead of matte blue they were glossy brown. They even had a made in Canada label on them. They didn't look or feel like a loomis rod. It sure reeked like a Shimano Convergence type rod. I was wondering if there are any changes south of the boarder. All I can say is I don't want any new made in Canada crap.

Centerpin. I am not sure about the made in Canada label you saw, but the color is O.K. I saw a press release in STS magazine that said Loomis was adding a few more rod colors, so you can easily tell one rod (weight) from another. Good idea. Must be a lot of people that have so many Loomis rods that they need to have different colors so they can easily grab the proper one. Nice problem to have though.

G.Loomis is owned by Shimano. all the old guard is gone and replaced with newbies. Never will be the same again. the end of another NW icon. images/icons/frown.gif images/icons/frown.gif

I talked to a loomis rep at the sportsman show . He said that they were adding new colors for marketing purposes. they still make GL2 in blue. No worries about the quality they are still the best rods on the market (my opinion).~John
I have been in the rod building business for a long time and have seen the rise and now the fall of Loomis.
I have one word for everyone, RAINSHADOW
I took a few to the Oly. Pen last week for a week of C&R on some huge nates and the Rainshadow rods were awesome. They fish as good or better than the GL3. I fished the 9' 8-12 fast action in a spinning rod and casting rod and the 10' 8-12 fast in a casting rod. Very nice....... for 1/2 the price.
It was good to get back to Forks, WA. and see everyone!

A guy out of Richmond, BC offers these blanks. They seem like a good alternative to Loomis if the action is similar. The 10.5' 1256F goes for about $165. What is the price down south?

About a year ago there was a G-Loomis thread where people were stating that they had gone down hill since being bought out. The last time I bought loomis rods was about two months ago and these rods are every bit the high quality rods that i've been buying for the last 5 years or so. Maybe even better with the current fuji components... Joe
Don't get me wrong, Loomis still makes a wonderful rod. They are still my favorite rod in the world, but I have seen things from them in the last few months that I haven't in the past.
I am also concerned w/ the price increases as of late. But I think they are worth it!
centerpin I am hopeing to come up to your neck of the woods this late july.and fish the Kalem any reports would be appreciated. Thanks RJ

RJ,
Should be another good year. It is too early to tell what kind of water we will have but there is always fish to catch. Send me an e mail closer to the time you are going to come and I will give you a better picture of what is happening. Maybe we can anchor up at the Hog Line and shoot some ****.
Nice muleys!!!

The GL2 that I looked at had the appearance and feel of a Shimano Rod. The made in Canada label sort of sealed it for me. It is a sad day for Loomis if they try to pass off these rods as having the same action. It seems to me that they are using the Loomis name to market Shimano crap at Loomis prices.
Where can I find information on Rainshadow rods?
I have been researching the Rainshadow rods very throughly the last few weeks. When I get a chance I will post the info ASAP. I was very please with how they look, feel and how they fished last week.
They are about the same color as an IMX, a grey mattte color. The same butt dia. and tip dia. as a GL3, not quite as fast action, wonderful drift rods, and the 10ft. was a great float rod.
