Dad and I hit Comanche on Saturday. We started out by Hat Island, dad pulling grubs stacked on the surface and 12 feet. I was pulling a J-9 orange Rapala on a planer board and J-7 firetiger Rapala a couple feet down. Weather was clear and flat calm.
Dad hooked up and lost a nice one after a couple of jumps before we had 3 rods in the water. I then caught a couple of 2 lbrs on the Rapala on the planer board. We kept picking at the fish on the surface until about 9:30 then dad’s 12 foot rod started going off. As it got warmer and brighter the fish moved down and 8 to 12 feet was pretty consistent. We got bit every 15 to 30 minutes but were loosing about half of the fish and missing as many. Ended the day with 8 fish in the boat between 2 and 3-10. Lost one big one right before we wrapped it up for the day. Lost 8 fish for the day and missed about 6 more. This lake needs wind to get the fish to bite well.
Sunday I took a old bass fishing buddy of mine out for some trout. Conditions were calm but with a lite overcast. We started in the same area (Hat Island) with Rich pulling a grub at 2 feet and me with a firetiger Rapala on the surface and a grub at 8 feet. We both got hits but missed them before we got all three rods in the water. Then Rich got one about 1.5 lbs. The bite then died. I cycled through various Rapalas, gold/black, blue/silver, orange. About 9 I was back to firetiger on the surface and I got pounded. Handed the rod to Rich and after a long fight he landed a 4-12.

A little farther and the firetiger rod went off again with a fish about 3 lbs. A little later and got one about 2 lbs. Hmmm, me thinks things are looking up.
I told Rich to pull his rod loose from the downrigger, which was only down a foot or two, and let it ride on the surface. Not five minutes later and he hooks up on a 4lbr. We kept working the Hat Island area with baits right on the surface and getting bites every half hour or so. About 2 o’clock my firetiger gets pounded and fish took off stripping line. I told Rich I had the big one. Worked the fish to the boat and it was a slug! Netted and weighed him, 6-1! My biggest trout yet.

We kept poking at the fish until 4 when we wrapped it up for the day. Boated 11 fish, lost 8 or 9 and missed I don’t know how many I sent Rich home with 3 cleaned fish for dinner which in total weighed 9-13. This did not include the 6 lbr. Awesome day!
