here is how our day went on Lake Billy Chinook.
started out rookies catching bull trout.. but with a little bit of trial and error!! we were pretty successful! probably caught about 20 to 30 bull trout, most being about 12" to 20" about 3 or 4 were just under size! about 23.5" We Released an early caught 27" fish and the Biggest one being caught by my brother,, which was also the biggest fish he has ever caught was about 29" and 10 pounds he was pretty excited! he had to take it home!!
most were caught on a lure that nobody exspected to work, a green hornidy! and a few on herring and Kwick fish!
this was my biggest 23.5"
2008
this was my brothers and the biggest of the day!
2009
this was the 27" caught by BIG RED RIPPER! (a.k.a brother from another mother)

We were the 18ft smokercraft (with no labels) gray boat with minkota on the front and black top and mercury motors.. probably the guys that looked like they didb't know what they were doing!:)
We could noy beleave how good we did down by perry south canp ground..
actually herring was only workimg in the morning seemed like once we were in the right spot! that Green hornidy ( imatation J-plug)..
every time we got it to the bottom it was only there for just a couple minutes and BAM there was another one!! the worst part was ..
We only had one of those green lures and I was Using it... and every one else in the boat was getting a little frustrated I think...but it was still lot of fun!!:) :)

How deep were you fishing? Were downriggers needed? I have fished over there but mostly in the fall. Thanks for the info?

You have to just look for schools of fish on the fish finder and target them some times there on the bottom! sometimes there suspended ! I think most of the time we were finding them in 80 to 130 foot of water! and adjusting our depth acordingly! They follow the shools of Kokes around!
so if you start finding big schools of fish.. there is usually a big one there TOO! found that to be the same every where if targeting Macks Also! Which is what I normally try to fish for!:)
And yes we were using downriggers thats about the only way too fish for them! IF trolling!!! no guess work involved just a good amount of luck!!!

If you don't mind me asking, were you using cut plug or whole herring, and what size? Also were you using a flasher in front of your herring presentation?

I wasn't using herring but my brother was using a whole blue label.. didn't work real well, and my brotherinlaw was cut plugging green label and he did catch that 27" on that... but I stuck with my J-plug and in the morning the cutplug seemed to get hits but the rest of the day seemed like the j-plug out fished them both...

Actually they were Blue label herring cut plugged on the chinook side, and I did have a Kone Zone flasher about 4' in front of it. I was trolling them the same way I troll for springers with a little bit longer leader and garlic scent. Thanks Ty for bringing the garlic scent. I did even pull a rook mistake that Ty forgot to tell all of you and that was I scented myself with some shrimp and krill oil. I injected my bait and forgot to put the cap back on the needle, and yes it hurt but it sure was funny!!!!! We did have Red label herring full being trolled also but it was not touched at all.
