yes, change it and carry a spare onboard. no , it will not spill gas all over but i sometimes put a bag under it or at the ready just in case. you don't want to be , say six miles upstream from camp on the rogue and have one foul-up. Umm, just for instance.

The recommendation is to change at least every year. I write the date on the filter so I remember when I last changed it.

Fuel may spill, just like an oil filter will. You can put a plastic bag around the filter when you spin it off. I use a clear plastic zip-lock bag, and I'll empty the fuel into the clear bag, let it sit a while, and visually check to see if I have any water (knock-on-wood, none yet.)

Before I spin-on the new filter, I check the seating area to make sure it is clean and smooth. Lube the gasket on the new filter just like on an oil filter, and tighten the same way. Put it on too tight, and it is difficult to remove next year.

You can also visually inspect the mounted unit for corrision, and clean as necessary.

Be sure to run the motor and check carefully for leaks and fumes.

If your boat has been sitting awhile, I would put a trip or two on it and then change it. When changing, I would suggest replacing with a racor or some other model with a see through bowl at the bottom so you can just look and see if you are getting any water in there.

When I had my jet boat, I went two years without replacing the generic one that came stock with it.... Never had any issues though, with water in the fuel that is. Water in the bilge... that was another story.

Like TB said, the time to change is after it's been used a bunch. I change it out once a year in the fall after Salmon season, then dump it out into a glass jar in the Spring and check for water/contaminate issues :twocents:
