View Full Version : A Simple Solution

Copied and pasted from the 'As the Ifish World Turns' thread. ...
I have come up with a very simple solution to the different philosophies Jen and I have over how this BB should be moderated. I should have thought of this obvious direction much earlier. .....
Thanks you all for your comments. I can't leave good friends like you. But I can't continue to moderate in a fashion out of my own character. I was going to think about this for a few days while going on vacation, leaving in a couple hours in fact. But I have come up with a very simple solution to all of this. I am going to do what I prefer; and that is to just be a regular contributing member of this Ifish BB, and a few other BB's. I don't want the "between a rock and a hard place" moderator role any longer. I just want to be like the rest of you good guys on here. So that's what I will be. Bigstew is capable of doing a very good job and he has my support. Thanks so much for your support and care guys! And thanks for all you have done for me Jen. I will be around from time to time to post as myself. Yipee, I'm free! - Steve (RT)

RT,
I respect your decision. The weights off your shoulders now. Enjoy the BB, good ol' #4, RT, "Chromer". I think I'd rather be a chromer than "Moderator" (much fishier title).
Keep the good info coming, I've learned so much here from alot of your posts, and look forward to reading them in the future.
Have a good vacation, Catch some fish.

RT - Would follow you to any board you started. The pursuit of happiness and in my case, fishing is LIFE. It is not being the perfect poster, contributor or moderator nor is it trying to please the entire internet global community. As far as your "defense" posts during recent total BS that ran amuk, everyone has choices. I was right in the middle of that one too, right or wrong. Turn if off like your TV set or channel or don't
read certain topics. Some posters and their arm chair opinions, with no field or life
experiences need to go play golf, fish for carp or chill out, especially if they enter a typically male domain, which there is no such thing anymore, (which is a good thing in most cases). To you all, shut up and fish or go play in a chat room. A seat in my boat is always open for you RT. (More than my former "fishin' buddy" of many years gives me now that he has his own boat LOL) images/icons/grin.gif

As much as i'd rather see RT tone down the humor and play moderator, you have to give credit to anyone that refuses to be someone other than who he really is.
Why is ifish here in the first place? Not because of RT. We all got to "meet" RT only because Jen started ifish, then invited Steve to moderate for all of our benefit.
What if any of you started your own business, with your own thoughts, ideas (and cash) say a "flower shop" because it was something you loved to do. You hire some good friends and they get together and say "hey, lets make this a pawn shop/flower shop combination". If you did not care for or even despised pawn shops, how would you feel going to work every day in a business you created? OK, far fetched but that's how i'm guessing Jen feels right now. My worst fear right now is that Jen's will get fed up and drop ifish...
RT knows he always has a seat in my boat and any site he moderates will get the other half of my browsing time. ******, if you can't handle looking at a family site you too can turn the channel.... Joe

Well, Salmonator, there's quite the flaw in your logic.
First, you're making a statement that RT had strayed from what he was supposed to do. Well, he was running a FISHING site. Do you just sit stone faced with friends and fish????? I BS, smile, laugh, have fun and fish hard while I fish. That's what he brought to this board. And yes this is Jen's sight, and she built this site. But RT made this site what it is today. He's the one who brought membership. He's the one that brings the multiple hits for this site.
Plus, with any "business" if it works, don't fix it, correct???? Say your buddy who took your flower shop added a pawn shop, but quadrupled your profit, would you fire him? Would you restore it just because you only wanted a flower shop? With a business you want revenue, with a website you want members/hits. Rt brings in the hits, and NO ONE can deny he hasn't. Here's a PRIME example. Jim Casey founded UPS. He only wanted a coast to coast company that served the US. He'd turn over in his grave knowing we're international now. It's completely against what he founded the company on. But, when int'l packs bring in the highest revenue do you think UPS wants to get rid of it????? I think not. You do what's best for the company. Since people have refered to this site as a company then you have to look at the pros and cons of whats going on and decide where the future lies. You don't change to meet the needs of the people and your company goes by by. That's life......
Steve, I'll support whatever you decide...

RT, boy iam glad you are going to be around. I was watching who has been posting and i was not seeing some names that i was used to seeing and i did not like that because those people are a excellent source of information. I dont know who will continue to post and not post but i sincerly hope not one person leaves because we will all lose a source of fishing info. Hell i even like a couple of the guys that did not agree with me on some posts. ha ha. Keep up the good work and all the rest of you start supplying me with some info on where the darn springers are. images/icons/smile.gif images/icons/smile.gif

Cagey, I would like to be around Ifish on occassion. It would be for posting interaction with friends and giving my 2 cents worth on NW fishing issues (such as gillnetting, etc.). But not for initiating fishing tech posts or initiating interactive fun type posts, in all likelyhood. Also, I have been offered postions at some other fishing websites for a function similar to what I have been doing here. I have returned expression of interest in some role at those sites but expressed not being interested in a full-time moderators role. That's just too time consuming and restricting. A less time consuming co-moderator role without shackles I might go for, and I have those offers and decisions to make this week or next. ...
Jennie has expressed to me on a number of occassions, and in a few of her posts, that she would prefer a simpler more localized website with benign ("nice") posts. She will have that opportunity now with her site. I wish her the best with constructing this site as she had envisioned it. - Steve

Steelhead 69,
I have a hard time agreeing with your logic in the flower shop analogy. This logic is why the world is becoming such a messed up place to raise our kids. I am part owner of a business and I have passed up certain opportunities because they did not line up with my belief system. Profit is great and that is what most people go into business for
but I have a conscience and I am proud of the fact that I have no problems sleeping at night. That is one of the bigggest problems with our society today, a lot of people are willing to abandon their values for the almighty dollar.
I don't know about anyone else here, but I want my kids to grow up knowing what their values are and standing up for them when they are challenged.
Look at where Disney has gone just for the money, IMHO. DOWN THE SEWER. Walt Disney was a decent man who catered to family values. He has been completely disgraced for the almighty dollar. images/icons/frown.gif
Also regarding your statement: If it works don't fix it. You should always be fixing your business and finding ways to make it run more efficiently and profitably. When the time comes that you think your business is fine the way it is and doesn't need any changes, that is the time to get out and go be somebody elses employee. No matter what you do there is a better way to do itk, whether it is business, fishing, chores or whatever. A good businessman is always looking for the better way to make himself stand above his competition, (Oh my God, I am starting to sound like Tony Robbins).
Maybe I got off track a little bit, but, you get the point.
Also, if you think it is just all about hits then why don't we just include a ***** section on ifish. If Jen did that she would get more hits then she ever imagined. Do You See The Logic Here?
Jen,
Stick to your guns, don't give up your values for revenue (Hits). I've seen many people do it and they all end up paying for it in the long run

Like i said befor iam to new on this BB to have an opinion. I love to fish and i love talkin to fishermen, be it nice or bad it just doesn't bother me. Iam really glad to hear that you will still share your information and i hope all of your staunch supporters will continue to do so. Tanner, that's what the new website will have, thanks for reminding everyone images/icons/shocked.gif I found plenty of logic in SH69er's post and also in yours, and neither are far-fetched. Let me put the flower shop into an analogy people will understand: If you build a flower/pawn shop and the foul-mouthed pawn shop gets the boot from you, but the customers were buying your flowers while pawning their vcr's off to do it, then what happens when customers stop buying your flowers???? Exactly. Missed ya on Sunday bro. Let me know about the frame. Hey Jerry, I got some of your jigs to try out, and working on modifying one of them, and I'll let you know my idea. Also, Big Thanks To www.silentapproach.com (http://www.silentapproach.com) for some of the new jigs. They'll be getting some ideas too. Maybe even in the bass field images/icons/shocked.gif

Yo Yall,
I am sorry I missed you too. I got so busy at the end of last week I did not get a chance to respond to you. O's said he'll have my frame done by Saturday images/icons/grin.gif so I'll be coming up again soon. I understand where SH69 is coming from I've been there. I have just decided that sticking to my guns is more important to me than a customer or two.
The one thing that should be mentioned though if you take the stance that I'm taking, You better be able to market to keep that new business rolling in to replace the business you lose. Anyway, it's all good as long as there is still fish to catch.
By the way, Nice analogy. Your pretty smart for a redneck images/icons/grin.gif

Tanner, no prob. I hung around my place til noon on Sunday, then for a change of pace, went rainbow trout fishing. Only hit of the day was a HUGE rainbow that was around 4-5 pounds. Sky rocketed out of the water about 6 feet and tossed the hook (whatever size is smaller than the #4) on the red wedding ring with nightcrawler set up. Shrimp smelly jelly was the ticket images/icons/wink.gif
Analogy? I just know what it's like to pawn your vcr for flowers images/icons/grin.gif

Hey Tanner, I know quite alot about businesses, especially working for one of the most profitable in the world. But what I meant by that post was that Jen had received quite the following from RT. His posting style was what brought most of us here. On a website, hits do mean business, Jen should be able to agree to that. You draw in a crowd then you'll get the advertisement dollars. I completely agree in sticking to your guns morally. BUT....if it's not a stretch from what invision then what does it truly hurt? As I said, UPS's original mission statement until the founder died was to be a "one country" hometown delivery company. Countrywide was as far as Casey wanted UPS to go. But went worldwide and profits are through the roof. Is UPS off the mark from what they originally planned? Yes and no. They're just covering a bigger planet instead of just the US. Ifish is no different. This is a fishing website, and fishermen/women are using it. You have a big following, and of course you have many different people with different tastes and morals. A mix of people is what makes this site great. But tick enough people and you lose part of the mix. You take one seasoning out of a sauce and it still will taste good, but be different. In a business, losing a customer is not a good thing. Of course it happens, I watch customers come and go off my route on a regular basis. It's all on your customer service. Say you tick enough customers off in your business. Well, they tell two of their friends, and they tell two of theres, and so on. After awhile you can count on a drop in business, especially if you're small. You'll get your regular customers, but you can lose your expansion.
I meant about the "ain't broke don't fix it" that this site was growing and expanding. Then to shut off a group (it seems like mostly we Washingtonians) will mean alot leaving or rarely posting. I realize that most major businesses have to change. UPS as a company had a philosophy not to advertise. Now they have TV adds, sponsor a Nascar, and do community events. Businesses change, but they have to be productive changes. Usually a gradual change. This has been a hardhit fast change, which always causes too much dust that takes along time to settle.
Hey ya'll, are talking about my jigs? Did Os give you some?? Or is there another Jerry you're talking to?
