Hello all you purveyours of bluebacks . boy I got great info from my release post ... so here I go again , lets hear about how much weight per depth at a sloooww trolling speed ... 0.5 - 1.8 MPH or so ,I picked up a pair each of 4lb and 10lb weights on sale at the worlds foremost outfitters in the bargain bin ... So inlighten me O'great trollers of corn, as the Kokanee bug has bitten me big time... Fishkisser:sick:

There are tables that show if your downrigger cable is angled back so many degrees, your actual depth is xx. If you can't find any, do your own experiment for empirical evidence with a sinker and some line. You'll find that a ten, fifteen degree slant doesn't make much difference.
For me 1.8 mph is too fast. I often backtroll to reduce speed when I find a school. Such a tactic works when I find a pod of boats jigging for kokes. Like the erroneous Hollywood depiction of Indians riding around a circled wagon train, I'll circumnavigate the flotilla in an octagonal pattern and pick off the strays. The 45 degree turns cause the gang troll (I like Les Davis's Giant Cowbells) to flutter. I'm convinced that this change in vibration arouses the kokes' curiosity and instigates a bite.

I fish mostly 8 lbs and that works for most depths to 70 feet. When I fish below that I get blow back and now have a 10 lb pancake for fishing deep.

I mostly use a 4# weight. I just watch the angle of the line, that tells me if I'm trolling too fast. Most of my trolling with the down rigger is less than 50'. The sharp turns and variation in speed does wonders for getting strikes!!

I don't let blowback bother me at all. In the ocean I may have 30deg line angle of corse, we are at 2.2-2.9 mph we just let out more line, you will hit you depth, all trial and error. you will get it down. and you will catch fish.
