Hey fellow fishers. Anyone want to get in on an excursion to Cape Mears for some sharp ones and pointy ones? 'Puffin' and 'Pilar' will be pushing off at first light from Garibaldi on Friday 3/23/01. Bring a boat with an empty fish box as the Ocean is infested with good things to eat. Our two boat flotilla is for joining if you want to enjoy the ocean at its best.

Hey Pilar - How did you get those crab to stand up like that? Are they trained? Can they do any other tricks?

John,
I would join you in a heartbeat if it was a weekend. Friday dont work well with an 8 to 5 kind of guy.

OC is producing squat right now. Talked to the Clackamette park fish counter yesterday who at 4:30 had reports of 2 nates released. No clipped springers checked yesterday.

I need in the confession booth of bent rod to tell how bad I have been. images/icons/cool.gif

Best of luck and flat seas to ya.

Hey Gutz, they dance too! Ask RW about crabs that know tricks. They do the hot tub boogie when we cook them. As you can see, the crab gage is optional when barnacle bill crabs are in the box.

Hey B.O.E. just do it brother. Every body gets the rockfish pox now and again.

Hey Sal. We remove the hook from the jig. The ling is so mean he comes to the boat without a hook! But be quick with the net cause he'll let go at the surface.

I haven't been as anxious to hear a report as I was with this one for a long time. 'Tis that time of year again...

Hey all you fishers, here's a belated report on our excellent adventure. Sorry no photos, the ocean killed the disposable camera. Reference the crab photo above and you'll get the idea.

The ocean was not flat. There was a nasty but manageable 3 - 4' chop rolling in from the south. We ran into it all the way to Cape Mears and went real slow. Several of the crew lost it all and went kind of green around the gills.

The bottom fish were pretty easy 3 at a time. We stopped to count after a furious 20 minutes. I highly recommend the large bright green double tail worm and 6 oz jig combo. The lings would not leave it alone. We used that as a weight for a 3 shrimp fly rig. Many male lings right at 24". We were done in less than an hour. All blacks and only one Canary rock fish.

The Rockfish are in huge suspended schools. Once we found biters we just drifted and hammered them. Let the first fish swim around and get two more right away. Checking crab pots on the way in we got 10 - 12 huge (bigger than the gage) barnacle encrusted, purple beauties in each pot. Needless to say we had to high grade and select 24 from about 50 to get a legal limit. Anything missing a leg or claw went back to the bottom.

Thanks Puffin, Phunybonz, Narwhale, and the others for a real yank and crank party. The next time the Ocean lays down I'll be back. That is if I get over being sick of eating crab on everything.

Well, got to go do the maintenance on the coolers in the garage. See ya!
