Put in a long day in the lower channel today. Near low tide I got a 17 lb hatchery fish. I was only aware of two other fish being caught. As I was coming out I heard a guy in the parking lot say he only knew of three fish being caught. The boats can be pretty well spread out so it's hard to know how well a lot of them are doing.

There were 4 smelt in its gut.

Hey U-4-A, Way to go! Thought I saw you upstream a bit. No fish for me today. Rarely marked one on the finder, either. I heard of one guy with a fish....maybe, it was you!!! The crowd thinned out quick. I gave it up about 12:30 or 1. There was so little action and fish showing, it was almost creepy. They could make a new movie, "Silence Of The ...Nets".

????Did ya get him to bite on that new fan-dangled-shimmy-wiggler outfit??? You've got 'commercial' in yer blood, boy!

Son-of-a-buck, that no good sucker-dog of a wind was cold on my dainty cheeks.

Hogtide, looked for you but thought you must have headed for 72 or a soccer game or something. The "fan-dangled-shimmer-wiggler outfit" (medium size Fish Flash) might have been the key to success. ?? So far, two in the boat and one escapee. Not bad for a punk kid. Even saw a guide boat using two of them.

With four smelt in todays fish I wonder if a good bite will have to wait till the smelt run is over. ???

I fished the O.C. area yesterday 'till noon then we went up the Clack and caught a steelhead. I only saw one fish caught, it was just out and down from the mouth of the Clack. I heard of one caught and one lost in the garbage hole and one caught and one lost on the sand bar.

At the end of the day the fish checker had counted three fish for 27 boats.

Fished out of Goble all day Sat. and the afternoon shift in the Channel on Sun. The phrase "Clean Sweep" comes to mind when thinking how the commercial guys did with their seasons. No positive bogeys on fish TV. No fish seen caught. No fish caught. Heard of one caught Sun. in the channel. Someone told me these fish travel 7 miles per day. Say 50 river miles to Astoria. Think I'll try to stay away at least till Friday.

F-Hunter,
My reports are right there with yours. Hard to imagine the nets being that effective. But the channel went from fast moving good sized pods of springers to nuttin' seen, nuttin' caught...except for my pal Dave and his amazing fish seducing device! I'll try again Saturday. It's gonna perk right up...right!!!!

We tried the upper channel, down to Coon Island. Marked a few fish but saw nothing above the surface. I understand that the hoards of smelt have so overfed the fish the only place anyone is catching anything is up at the fishery. We need rain, which is probably hnot coming....so watch for good days to fish the ocean.
