I know that you don't need a license to net smelt from the bank, but wonder about doing it from a boat.
Can you dip from a boat in the Columbia or the Cowlitz?

I heard you could fish from a boat and dip in the mainstem Columbia on the days it is open and if you launch from Oregon you could get 25lbs instead of the 10 that you get if you are dipping from the bank in WA. BUT!! you cannot go from Oregon and dip in the Washington rivers and take 25lbs!!

I want to know if anyone from this board has actually successfully dipped smelt in the Columbia.

I haven't actually done any dipping in the Columbia yet, but I am planning it for tomorrow so I've done some homework.
I'm told to be downriver or at the mouth of the Cowlets, and watch for gulls. When the gulls start circling and diving on the water, race over there and dip; kind of like tuna chasing. I'll be partnered up with a friend with a sled, so if we strike out on the Columbia, we'll move up the Cowlets.
I understand that the Columbia is open for smelt every day, and that Oregon launched boats get 25lb limits. I'll be out there tomorrow afternoon. I answer to "Adrianna" on VHS Ch. 16.
