This is kind of embarrassing but I have to know if anyone else out there has done this. Have you ever been carrying your favorite Steelhead rod through the house and bumped the tip on the ceiling and instinctively set the hook? It may just run in my family as I have seen my father do it also. He really turned red when he realized that I had seen him do it. Try to deny it Fishen Fool.

NO - none of us has ever done that Grant! If I were you I wouldn't have even posted that you did that. Do ya want me to delete it real quick? ...... Naaah, jk. That just means you have that quick reflex built right in now. Does that cause you to whiff a lot of 'nook bites? Just Curious http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif heehee

I shouldnt admit this but here it goes.
We have two cats and one of their toys is a yarn ball attached to some yarn rigged on a bass rod. I was "cat fishing" and after several "hook ups" the action slowed. Well I still had the my "line in the water" when all of the sudden I had a "take down". Total instinct, I set the "hook". The wife looked at me like http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif.

I am glad I am not the only one who sets hooks in their sleep. It usually happens after a long day of steelhead fishing and it usually wakes me up. A friend of mine accidentily hit his wife one time.

I love the cat thing. We do the same thing here with our cat, but use a "batter bird", feathered cat toy, for bait. This way I keep in practice casting all winter long! Its amazing how good you get in placing your "bait". http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/tweetz/nod.gif
Also, the one that wakes me up everytime is seeing that bobber go down in my sleep. What a jolt that gives me http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Haven't written for a while, but just had to respond to this. Since I've been working two jobs last few months no real fishing has taken place. I have been caught by my boys once on the couch reeling and taling about my big fish. I also woke up one night while landing a fish. Kids think I'm going nuts. Youngest won't even talk to me cause he wants to fish so bad. Looks like we'll have a chance in a couple weeks. Thanks for a post that made me smile.

Night fishing out of Newport my eyes just couldnt stay open any longer but I continued reeling up in my sleep(I doze off easy). When the weight caught up to the tip of my pole the hook was set and the boys are still laughing about it.

Returning home from a 2 week fishing trip in BC. Fell asleep at the wheel, reading a map while waiting for the ferry. A slight breeze blew through window catching the map and tugging on my hand. I immediatley proceeded to savagely rip the map exactly in half at the tug. My partner just stared at me. Think he was a bit anxious to get home,by then.

Yeah, I've set the hook a few times in my sleep. Also smacked the wife one night swiping at the b-ball going for a steal. It woke me up, but I stayed "asleep" as she asked me why I had done that and cursed at me. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For you cat fishers out there: Next time you are in Central Oregon (or Washington I suppose). Try chipmunk fishing. Take a spinning rod and tie some bread onto the line (please dont use a hook). cast it out in an area where chipmunks frequent (usually around the cabin). The fun part is, when they start coming for the bread, start reeling and watch them chase it down. When my buddies and I do our annual Spring River trip, this is usually how our non fish fishing time is spent.

I wonder if the kids would fall into the trap.. Has anyone by chance played with there kids this way. If so did you end up sleeping with the dog/cat?

I've participated in 'cat-fishing' as well. A few years back I was in the backyard practicing with my flyrod. I need lots of practice....
Anyway, my cat was growing more and more excited as he saw the line laying down in the yard and being retrieved in steady jerks. All of a sudden without warning and without me seeing it, the line straitend and the rod doubled over. Of course I 'set the hook', and had my cat laying on his back with the line wrapped between his paws and in his mouth.
This turned out to be the best fly fishing I've ever had! Over an hour of precise casts had produced dozens of 'hookups'. It was great practice, too. The cat would only take the offering if it landed within about a 10-ft diamater of him.
The next few outings I tied his favorite toy on the end of the line and even laced it with a great scent - katnip....
Over the years I've found that yarn works just as well, with or without scent....
