I was just wondering how many guys from St. Helens post here. I've seen a few, Like Hogtide and Dustin, but how many others.

Let me know what your boats look like, and I'll say hi at the ramp. I've got a White w/a blue flake stripe, Skeeter Bass boat. I haven't got my IFISH stickers yet.

I'm from St. Helens but currently wintering in Yuma AZ. We are headed back at the end of this week. My husband and I have 2 boats. A 17 ft Wille Preditor with a 70 hp Evinrude prop and a 14 ft Zodiac with a 25 hp Johnson.

Keep your rod tip up.

Proudly from Warren, Oregon...only a suburb of the megalopolis known as St. Helens. I have an Alumaweld SuperVee, Tiller Merc Pump and Merc Troller. No paint w/ plum colored seats. I can easily be recognized as the only fisherman that appears more interested in the freshness of his Girl Scout Cookies, than his bait.

Never hurts to rub a little bit of the 'Samoa' on your herring!

Not St,Helens, but across the channel. We're the Ifish representatives of Sauvies Island.
Hewes 176 Searunner with black trim and typically no fish to get the boat all messy.

OK fine, I will tell them. No, this isn't about a St. Helens scandle. It is about "Megalopolis". Back before the turn of the century St. Helens was picked and destined to be the biggest city and shipping port in the Northwest. Bigger than both Portland and Seattle. So what happened? Well, that's why I need your help here Hog', or anyone in the know. I'm trying to scratch the story out of the ol' memory cells here. ...

St. H's location just inland up the Columbia was thought to be ideally located for ocean ships, upriver barges, and the railroad to all meet to be the N.W. hub of commerce. And they had a pretty good idea. The town was started by some big money development. However, after a few years of growth, someone got the bright idea that the banks of the Willamette River where Portland stands today could be made accessable to ships and also be closer to the growing population of Oregon's Willamette Valley; thus cheaper means of trade commerce for the Valley. Here's where it kind of gets a bit fuzzy for me. ... How did they dredge channels all the way up to Portland for large cargo ships way back then? How could Portland start later than St. Helens and take away the commerce and growth to become the big cheese of Oregon cities? Also, Oregon City by the falls was the first city in the State's history. Why didn't they think of dredging the Willamette all the way up there, where they were even closer to the Valley? I don't know these answers but it sure must have something to do with why most people from St. H and O.C. are so ... ah ... 'challenged'. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif jk jk jk ....

As for why Seattle became bigger than Portland, and Vancouver B.C. bigger than that, I just don't know. Anyone know why? Probably because there were no giant rough river bars to cross to reach an inland port. Or maybe they just had better bars period? But that wouldn't explain why those guys up there are so dam stupid. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Any of you Emerald City guys know any history on that? - RT

BTW, any of you guys from there that see a sled with a small lettered "RT" on the transom, fishing for springers down that way, don't torpedo the boat! I loaned it out to some real nice neighbors this spring. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Port Townsend was supposed to be the big city up here. It was right on the straight and had a harbor. Kind of neat to look at the old victorian houses and old hotels. Port Gamble was another big mill town along with Port Hadlock, and Port Blakely. I think Seattle grew and surpassed the other cities during the Klondike gold rush at the turn of the century. I'm not sure about how much larger Vancouver is than Seattle. Its the second largest city in Canada. Nice place to visit. By the way my wife was born in St Helens.

Holy Smokes, RT!!! I think you've spent waaaaaaay too much time down here in St. Helens land. Have you been bottling our water and taking it home with you? I think it's starting to effect your brain buddy http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif It kinda scares me when people know so much about our little neck of the woods. Next thing you know you're gonna tell me fish stories about Scappoose Creek, and the steelies you used to catch outa there!!

Yeh, RT you're scaring me buddy! Anybody that has spent that much time out here and knows so much about our little town, but doesn't live here, has got to have a reason for it! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif Waddaya hiding?

If I see that little sled out our way, I'll stop by and be sure and show you're freinds how to catch some real fish (the ones with spines!) Don't be suprised if they give it back to ya with a minnkota strapped to the bow and a new glitter paint job. (he, he)

Now tell me RT, waddaya know about a little suburb of St. Helens called YANKTON??????

Aaron

Oh yah, I don't go by "Jellyhead" for nuthin. It wasn't my mom's fault she dropped me when I was just a little guy. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some of the older bars and businesses downtown have a few historic photographs, showing St. Helens as a full fledged sea-going port. Major league vessels of commerce at dock. Don't know what really happened that killed it's economic potential as a port. I do know that the city actually 'created' Sand Island attempting to keep the channel clear. The island does not exist in old photos. Might be that the 'spoils' from Sauvie Island might have been just too much to contend with, when trying to keep the channel clear in front of town.(guessing)

Did the Portland/Gresham thing for 42 years and moved out here about 2 years ago to get away from it. I like small town, a little slow/backward...a bit of "americana".My kids go to THE MOVIE on the weekend and I know everyone standing in line.

Don't let these Ol' Boys in their bad looking glas boats fool ya'. Those Penn reels, Golden West line and solid glass rods put a lot of fish in the bottom of the boat!

ya...we are semi- dufus.

Hey,

Did you realize that the slough (Mult. Channel) is actually the 'true'Willamette River channel. That wide ugly stretch between Fred's Marina and the Port of Portland is actually a dredged floodplain, that rarely submerged, except in the spring of the year.

Another St Helens poster. Have a 12' aluminum puddle jumper, my little lake machine. Won't ever see me braving the Columbia in it. Need to get into a bigger craft, but don't want to rack up any big debts to do it. Got a big family to keep clothed and fed. I'm a north coast bank maggot for the most part. If you have kids and want to enjoy the weather, Trojan and Salmonberry lake were on the stocking schedule for this week.

I have been prowling the Channel and Columbia in my red North River Sportjet w/black canvas. It's painfully new, but I feel like less of a fishin geek gear nerd when there is fresh springer blood dripping from the scuppers. http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'll be watching for you guys. Run on over and say hello.

Howdy guys,
Though we live in Portland, we have kept our boats at the St Helens Marina for several years now. We practically live on one during most of the summer and have a very special place for this community in our hearts. Several of our best friends and a couple of my best fishin' buds reside in town. There is no other place in the region I would rather spend time than St. Helens.

The improvements that the City and OSMB have made to Sand Island have, and continue, to contribute greatly to the community. Though the Historic Old Town area is a gem, It continues to struggle. This area of town has such great potential. Bob,Robin, Brad and Lisa have infused life into the marina and we look forward to continued improvements. Though It was nice when it was quiet and seldom used, the improvements are welcomed. I'm glad to see the town well reprensented on the Ifish DB.

Dustin, sorry to hear your havin' boat troubles. Has Sanders been any help?
Tshickam, we also have a 12 footer. It's a green '95 Smokercraft "Kenai" with 24" sides. I fish this boat out on the "big creek" all the time, even in the summer when the strong NW winds blow and it's
often worse than crossing the bar at Tillamook. It can be done and the small skiff is easy to slip into a hog line where other boats can't. Don't do anything you are not comfortable with. We have pulled TOO many guys out of the water because they went beyond the limits of their boat and their skills.

My serious springer fishin' starts next weekend after the nets have been out for a few days. May go out Saturday with "Doghouse" skipper to work Bachelor and Fishtrap flats. If you guys see us out there in a blue and white 24' Reinell or a 12' green smokercraft that says "Kenai" on the side give us a shout.

You guys may want to check out this site. Its got some good ariel maps of St. Helens and the "big creek."

Good fishin' and hope to see y'all on the water.

David

Hey Jelly', please excuse my silly mood last night when I was posting. I get in those often. In fact, I'm in one again right now - yeehaw http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif . So, Scappose Creek huh? Since it's closed to fishing for steelhead anymore I will tell you that, yes, I did fish that little steelie creek many times back in the 70's; along with lots of smaller steelie streams - loved them! Still do! I even caught steelhead in very small holes above that crappy fish ladder they had on Scappose Creek. My friends and I could catch them there even when it was muddy. We just put milky egg clusters on with a bright Spin N Glo and bounced the small holes and seams from the bank - heck some of the holding areas weren't much wider than our Fenwicks, so it was easy to know where the fish were and we just bounced the eggs in front of the fish. ... And "YANKTON" ??? What kind of St. H suburb name is that? http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Let's see - what do I know about Yankton? Hmmm. Is it an anakronym for Jerktown? ... nah, jk. Is it a nickname for Prescott Beach? You know, with guys yanking on the rods all day. Yankees? I give http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Hey Aaron, You know what my boat looks (looked) like. It’s now the one sitting at Stevens with the wrecked transom. Anyway, they have a big backlog at Smoker and we are expecting our replacement around the first of April, so we should be just in time. The new one will look pretty much like the last, except we are upgrading to the deluxe model, built in gas tank, electronics… same 45 HP pump and a as yet to be determined kicker.

Oh yeah, anyone looking to save $100.00 off the retail price of a new kicker in the $1,800-2,000 price range, get a hold of me.

Well, its good to see the local representation on the board. I'll keep my eyes peeled for everyone.

RT, as far as "Yankton" goes, I couldn't tell ya where that one came from?!? I grew up out there, and no one could ever tell me the origin of that one.

I thought I remembered you talking about Scappoose Creek in the small stream thread a while back. I really miss fishing those little streams, but I still got a few of em' in my back pocket you can still fish. I love to "stalk" steelies in them w/the fly rod in low, clear water.

LTF, it still makes me cringe when I think about the boat wrecked. Hope the new one shows up in time!

BTW, Hogtide, how long have you been teaching at SHS? I grad. in 93', I might have had you as a teacher. I was the one you were always telling to put away the issue of STS, and do my homework! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Dustin, If you ever get a chance, go to the museum down at the courthouse. It has a ton of neat old stuff and pictures of the area!

Anyone else from Here?
