Need a few pointers on my first Salmon fishing trip on the mouth of the mighty Columbia! Planning on being over there the last week of March (Spring Break)....

1)Typical Bait used (Roe, plugs, etc.)?
2)Typical rig set-up (size hook, weight, lb Test, etc.)?
3)Typical depth of water fished in?
4)Troll, drift or anchor the boat?
5)Are Gill Netters/Commercial Crabbers much of a problem?

FYI - I have a 22' Deep-V equipped with CB, Marine VHF, LORAN-C, and I recently picked up a Navigation Chart for the area.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I've never gone after the spring run down there, but ... why not ?

What works in the fall is:

VERIFY TODAY'S REGULATIONS
Don't forget the crab pots.
Fish the incoming and high slack tide.
Washington shore, buoy 10 to the Bridge.
Troll whole herring, sometimes anchovies.
30# main line -> diver -> 25-30# leader (those teeth are SHARP)
Fish the edges of the tidal rips (can't miss 'em) or right in the rip (hard to steer!) go where the boats are, keep an eye out for those catching fish.
STAY CLEAR OF THE SURF ON THE SOUTH JETTY, KEEP ALERT! big river<->big ocean - if it's really windy stay on shore.

mjrhoads,
When you get back, let us know how you did and what's happening there. Thanks.

I don'f any one fishe in the spig, I'm sur there will be some ople to try it. The better fishing is probably going to be farther up river from Astoria.

Some people do fish in Youngs Bay for the springers that they release in there. You will have to find out when they will be gillnetting in there and plan your fishing around that, hopefully before they are netting it.
