View Full Version : Clackamas Steelhead
Fished from the mouth of Eagle Creek down today. Thanks to David Johnson's post the other day, I hooked two fish, both of which were large and got away. As he suggested I used flame colored cheaters, with a small glob of eggs.
One fish was holding in some white water behind a boulder - not your usual steelhead water. The other was right on the front edge of a deep drop-off after shallow, fast running water.
Obviously, David knows what he's talking about - thanks for the tips and all of your posts!

Thanks for the post CZ and for describing the type of water you found some biters!

I fished with David 2 weeks ago. He is a fine guide who goes the extra mile to put his clients into fish. Some of you have questioned his luck this year--implying that he may be stretching the truth...you're wrong. Having got to know David over the past year, one thing I can say with certainty is he tells it like it is. If he does not get fish he'll tell you--the kid just works harder than most of us, and knows his fish to boot. Like CZ said, he knows what he's talking about. I would recommend him to anyone. Peace, Hawg

Good job CZ.
I wanted to comment on a statement from your post.
That so-called non-typical holding water for steelhead you spoke of is where I pull 90% of my fish from. These areas seem to be where there is little pressure from others that are fishing the "typical" holding water. The fish also seem more agressive to taking bait because they have to act quick before it gets away in the swifter areas.
Don't overlook these areas. You'll thank yourself more often than not and also cover a lot more water because it only takes a few casts to cover these small areas before moving on.

It was behind a boulder? As in, where it could rest? Weird.

Hey FF - What is your favorite method for such water? Seems like this is the only water available this year. Thanks, drifter.

Drifter,
There really isn't much to it. The main thing is to keep the belly of your line out of the fast current around the rock in order for your bait to hang in the pocket long enough for the fish to find it.
Good luck.

Hey drifter-
It's also ideal water to lob a float.
