Does anyone catch any trout Steelhead or salmon in Milton Mcnulty or scappose creeks????
thanks Tyler
Tyler,
More creeks than you think have steelhead in them. The only problem is, nobody is likely to tell you about it. When you're able to fish a small creek and find a steelhead, it's something you're likely to keep under your hat. That's because most creeks only have a few fish coming back to a select few holes, and they're not able to withstand much fishing pressure.
If it looks fishy, give it a scouting. Keep in mind that most creeks get small numbers of fish back, but if you time it right, creek fishing tops it all. Battling a tough fish in the small confines of a creek can be as challenging as steelheading gets.
Don't be surprised or take it the wrong way if you don't get much feedback on a question about creeks. Once you find one that produces, my advice is to keep it for yourself and talk about the Sandy, Clack, Alsea......you get the idea.
Fish on.......
Be really careful and read the regs good. Most small streams are not open to fishing. Not even catch and release.
Not sure if it's open, but I talked to a fried a couple days ago who had seen a guy near Milton with a pole. My friend talked to the guy and apparently he catches steelhead out of there.
Sounded a little fishy to me.

Tyler,
I live in St. Helens and grew up fishing Milton Creek. In fact, my biggest steelhead ever has come out of milton. (36" hatchery stray).
Anyways, we used to fish it alot. But now it is not open for salmon or steelhead. It was listed as a Willamette tributary and willamette wild fish stocks are severly depressed, so they closed the stream. Trout is open to no bait, catch and release only. Check the synopsis for more details. I wouldn't get caught trying to fish it, who knows what endangered or threatened species act they could charge you with violating.
Same goes for scappoose creek. It's a real bummer they closed them. It was almost all catch and release for steelhead, because the run was almost entirely wild. Now I have to drive an hour to even fish any creek for steelhead.
Good luck
Aaron

If a creek isn't listed in the regs as open for salmon and steelhead you can't fish for them (even C&R). If a creek isn't listed in the regs at all (and located in the upper willamette valley or coast), it's closed to fishing period until May 26th. There are very few creeks in the valley that are listed as open to Salmon or Steelhead fishing. A lot of streams that used to be open aren't anymore. No Steelhead fishing on the Lucky, Yamhill or Tualatin rivers, or Gales creek. The funny thing is the Tualatin and Yamhill are open for bait with #1 or larger hooks, but closed to salmon/steelhead fishing. Does this make sense? I guess if you're fishing warmwater, but that's about it. The biggest Cuttie I've caught out of these rivers is about 15", and those are pretty rare. If you want to do some creek fishing you're going to be heading south or to the Coast. Get a gazetter and do some scouting/research. Just make sure you are crystal clear on the regs. I would imagine those tickets are pretty spendy.

DanS got the ticket there. There's no way some of the rivers I fish could handle a Seattle weekender crowd like the Cowlitz gets. Hell sometimes I wonder if the Cowlitz or Blue Creek can even handle it sometimes. Just meet you some good folks and who knows, you may be sworn to secrecy and hear the words, "welcome to the secret spot" also followed by the words, "if you tell a soul about this place I'll f'n bleed you, real nice and quiet like." muh ha haha

Also Tyler, sometimes if you want to know about really small rivers, it's best to try and ask someone in an email because this fishing board gets so many lurkers just wanting to gobble up information. Damn buzzards.

No doubt Ramstrong. I was hoping someone would know what I was referring to.
Damn, he's stuck in worse than an Alabama tick.

Scapoose and Gales Creeks, closed now, were just 2 of the many small creeks and rivers that I used to frequently fish; and just loved it. I agree with Dan that it's great fun fighting a tough fish in small quarters. It was easy to cover most holding spots too. There are still small rivers to fish but most don't get the number of steelhead and salmon they used to.
