Very interesting, Jim. Under many of the topics, two dollar values are listed; can you tell me what each corresponds to? One I assume is the 1996 sport fishing participation value, but the other I'm not sure about.

Thanks,

Kwiky

OOOPPPPSSSS!!!

The two numbers represent Oregon only which is the first set, the second set is US Totals.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Jim.

Do these figures make you wonder why the non-Indian and Indian commercial harvests get better consideration despite all the economic impact of sportfishers? Especially dramatically on a per capita basis! Could it be that they get together better and hire lobbyists? Their collective wheels are sqeakier than all of our complacent, lazy, and seemingly well oiled wheels? Food for thought.

RT, I have to agree with you. With all those $$ amounts our collective voice means squat because "we" as sportfishers are not organized like "our" adversaries. Can we not afford to join organizations like the REcreational Fishing Alliance? In my opinion NO! Your dues to this organization will supportthe lobbying efforts necesary for change...in our behalf! Check out their web site and decide for yourself if you want someone representing your interests. At this link they provide regional contacts for Ca., Or, and Wa. Maybe shoot them an e-mail and find out what they are up to.....then send in your dues!

several concerns here.

* If they are the ONE organization we should support, why have I not heard of them?

* Not sure I want to pay to fight all those battles all over the globe, I like to focus political action a little more locally

* Same question as any "non-profit" - how much money goes toward real action, as opposed to supporting the organization's administrative costs. I don't see the answer to that question on their web site.

* The web site, in fact seems a little like a Internet money making venture ...

tell us more !

Great looking study for the sportsmen. The information comes from the American Sportfishing Association. They more information on how the numbers stack up across the country and who funded/researched the study. Thanks for bringing this information to the forefront Jim. Now if we can only get the people in charge to understand these numbers politically.

Phish-on, Your concerns are noted. I don't have all the answers...yet! I do know that on the east coast (coast of origin) the RFA has done a great deal for fisheries conservation and allocation issues. The RFA movement to the west coast is a fairly recent accomplishment so I can understand why many fisher folks have not heard about them. I suggest you peruse their accomplishments section to see what they have achieved on the east coast. I have sent a e-mail to them requesting info on how much $$ goes towards the fight vs lining administrations pocket. I do know that this is the first grass roots organization to begin to organize sportfishers. If you have any knowledge of any other organizations working for congressional lobbying in our behalf I would be more than happy to support them also!

I think it is short-sighted to believe that any $$$ donated be only applied locally..sportfisheries issues are much more wide spread and should be fought with a consolidated effort on all fronts. I think a e-mail to your regional representative might also provide some good info on what the RFA goals are in relation to your interests. I understand your wanting to put $$ into local fights but do you know of any organizations which are effective? If so let's pour the $$ to them! Many of these issues are or will be dealt with at the federal level, NMFS for example. I don't have all the answers but I do support the RFA with my annual dues.

I will try to find out the answers to your questions but in the mean time check out their mission statement and accomplishments to date. Most of all contact the regional representative for more info on what their mission concerning west coast fisheries are.

We can and should provide a united front in our effort for equitable fisheries regulations.....I don't know if the RFA is the ultimate answer but to me they are a pretty viable option!!

Hammer,
The RFA here in Washington is new and relatively leaderless...one guy Mike Gilchrist is doing a heck of a job but admittedly brand new to the whole fisheries thing. The battles here are much more complex than what they faced on the East Coast. I think if the RFA is serious they need to placea some regional directors out here, if they don't this is one guy who won't send my money their way. However that essentially leads me with no where to send any money. Somehow we need an Oregon/Washington organization...I failed at putting a Washington group together and made some enemies because of it...that part is sad but the reality stays the same we need to unify our voice somehow, someway. My opinion once classic group problems are ironed out is to simply figure out a way to hire a director and pay him or her well...60k a year is my thought with expenses. Oh by the way, in case some past friends are reading this...I am not the guy for the job! http://www.ifish.net/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyway...these figures speak loudly...I have used them for some time now and just realized this morning that I should share them.

Have Fun Everyone!

I think any orginazation one joins will be helpful. Wheather it's a habitat restoration group or an orginazion like RFA. It at least gets you counted....

Many thanks to the person that compiled and posted the data. Very important, especially with the ORegon Legislature in session.

Up to the top of the list.
