Oxbow is a HUGE park with miles of water, you will want to be prepared to skip from on spot to th next,Dogde has limited and easily accessed water water unless you access the river from the opposite side and hike down stream(however, you would be trespassing and though the area is senic and often productive, I do not encourage it).
Oxbow is still an area I find myself discovering it a variety of water types :Plunking best at boat ramp ask MRDORKFISH or the other ifishers you may meet there in a little red tent(a great bunch of fellas). The walk up from the boat ramp has some goo water for fly, jig or drift fishing. Also the first turn out after entering the park I believe says "flood plain" it is a long walk through a flood plain of willows but what great water awaits you!Great for drift fishing jig or fly.I am sure the area will overwhelm you if you don't consider it's size and don't try to take it in all in one day.But do become familar with this park as it holds beatiful sites besides fine fishing.
Have an excelent day and be sure to say "Hi " t the guys at the boat ramp.

I fished at Oxbow for a couple of hours Sunday. Where I fished you did'nt need waders or hip boots. I fished at the first turnout on the left, after you enter the park. There is a sign that says "floodplain" and has parking. Walk down the trails to the river and you will find some good spots. Sunday the water color was gin clear. Corkies and yarn should work. Also bobber and jig. If the water is as clear as it was Sunday, try a SMALL corkie and no yarn.

I fished below Marmot Dam last weekend. I am new to the river, so I don't know the stages that the river goes through but it seemed very sandy for being so high on the river (I guess thats why its called the Sandy!).

Is this section of the river normally this Sandy, or is it a byproduct of our dry winter? I've been told that Steelhead don't like sandy stretches because it iritates their gills. Any truth to this?

I'd wear your waders as many good spots you will be in the water to fish at Oxbow. I've fished it for many years and had some awesome days. But not for a couple years. The reduced planting of hatchery fish has hurt the fishing a lot. I did hook the biggest steelhead I ever landed right there in the park; a 18# hen that was a beauty! Good luck and hope you get into a fish.

Oregon FishChaser, I was at Marmot on Monday (2/19). I had the same exact question on Blacktail's thread - "Another good day on the Sandy". The answer I got was yes, steelhead won't hold in the sand because of irritation. I believe the sand is from the slide the river had in October of last year. Way up on Mt. Hood. Basically, since that storm in October the river has not had a good flush. I would expect the sand to sit there until (if) we ever get a torrent of rain and the river gets to 14' plus. When you get down toward Oxbow and even to Dabney, the river was coated in a fine silt. So, it seemed the sand settled out in the Marmot area. Perhaps coarser material farther up. My take on what you saw.

I was up at Marmott about 30 days ago and the slaughter hole had just filled in according to the man I bumped into from PGE. He said the sand was moving like a big blob down the river. It filled up the res. behind marmott and kept oozing down the river. According to him you are correct the sand will continue it's rolling, oozing march down the river at the next high water event. I could not believe all the sand. There was no rocks,no tail out at the slaughter hole just sand.
