What are the thoughts on a break-in for the motor. Some guys just put them on and go others try to break them in. This is kind of hard when you need them to push a 21ft boat. I would appreciate your in put?:help:

I had a shop break the T8 in for me. They backed the boat into a flooded truck loading ramp they use for testing outboards, ran it at various rpms for the break in and gave it the 10 hour service when they were done. I use it for slow speed trolling and didn't want to waste 10 hrs. on the water running it at different speeds.

I'd definitely say break it in. Just plan a day of breakin time and get the majority of it over with. After the initial time of limiting and varying RPMs, the really important part is "run it like you stole it"... run it hard so it will seat the rings. The biggest problem with four stroke kickers, especially purchased this time of year, is that they never get up to operating temperature and thus never properly get seated.

The day after I got my new boat, I ran it all the way up through the Hanford Reach from Richland to Priest Rapids dam to break in the big motor, then broke in the kicker most of the way home.

Yamaha recommends a break-in period,do we know more than Yamaha?

I followed the break-in schedule for my T-8. Its not hard, first hour at half throttle, second hour at 3/4 throttle. For the next 8 hours don't run at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time.

Thanks guys, you reaffirm my intentions. A friend of mine who is "in the business" said oh just run it. I don't feel this way after shelling out 2K for a new motor. But, your advise is well received. Thanks:smirk:
